I borrowed a digital and met up with Jim (gneu Mainsheet guru) and Karen (Spike) at the dock last Monday in San Diego... Jim is in the following pics and can be seen carefully and adroitly maneuvering there cherished C25 "Indiscipline" out of the slip and down the channel for an evening cruise. He'd invited me but I declined basically because you wouldn't be seeing the photos of these hardworking people otherwise.

The webmaster, the dogs with coats (capes?)(can you find dog #2?), the girls are down inside, and Jim is at the helm. I think dog #2 was barking orders to Jim.

Indiscipline in the evening on cruise mode:

BTW, I was working on my boat earlier that day when a guy came by and introduced himself to me as a C25 owner with a slip several docks away in a "powerboater" area. He's been an owner for a very long time...has a 78 boat and is the original owner. He had visited this C25/C250 site and noted Jims' messages and looked us up. There happens to be an available slip just on the other side of Jim and Karen's boat so he'll be moving there soon (probably there already). So now our "fleet" grows to three with two C250s around who may join us. Now, what is our fleet number? Do we just pick one? For those in San Diego who might be interested, we are at Marina Village Marina near Sea World and Driscoll's Marina on L Dock, slips 21, 22, and now 23.
Here's our boat in the slip with the old, old, faded mainsail cover . That's Jim and Karen's boat in blue (not faded, as in very recently new) to the left. They have one of those snap-on cabin covers, too, which is really the way to go. I use a silver tarp which looks real tacky.

Just ordered a new burgundy cover and tiller cover from Gary Swenson's Ullman Sails loft in Ventura, CA $190 for the main cover, with string tie around mast, NOT velcro, and heavy duty, UV resistant, Sunbrella. The tiller cover cost me $18. I actually talked to the lady who does the work on these things and she was really nice about telling me, in detail, how she does the stitching and reinforcing of the cover. I have always found these people to be great to deal with and have always talked on the phone directly with Gary Swenson. I had all 3 of my sails for our C25 made by them and 2 more for my previous C22. (I am not getting a cost break for plugging their loft but sure wish I could )

I think I'll send this now before it gets any longer....

OK, help me out....is that a (red) winch handle storage location on the coaming of Indiscipline or is it operating something else?

All photos are fair game…
Jim Stumbled into a really nice, well found boat. Therefore pictures of his boat Must be scrutinized with care.
Jim, in the picture with the winch handle in the coaming, what is the winch handle stuck in?
Jim, Why is the forestay so loose on a furler system?
Jim, I still think it is weird that the sail cover points down.
Man those are big winches.
Is the check block and cleat on the side of the coaming for the furling line or part of a spinnaker pole hauling system? There seems to be some other hardware along the genoa track, what is it, are your cars controlled?
Is there a safety line in the backstay or is the adjuster the only thing that connects it to the transom?

Great pics. We don't get to see many C25s. Always enjoy seeing how others are setup. Will wander down that way if we get over.

Guess I should've jumped at that slip earlier....

Might come over this weekend and look around. There are a couple of possibilities for us to just rent, Harbor Sailboats has an out of area deal that looks interesting.

Just back from a week in Sacramento.

The combings have little star shaped rubber sockets for holding the winch handles. Very handy.

The forestay is loose because the new sail won't roll or unroll unless the line is slightly slack. Notice that I have 2 forestays - a fixed one and a furling one. Unless slightly slacked, the top of the sail wraps around the fixed forestay. I usually leave the furling for3estay slack when not sailing to prevent wear on the wire/rope and clutch. I also slack the backstay. In the picture the roller forestay is slacked all the way off because we were just motoring.

The sail cover is cut to point down. I don't know why. With a luff rope instead of slides the sail ends up rolled up and hanging under the mast. It works. I have not messed with it.

Those cool Harken self tailing 2 speed cockpit winches are worth more than the boat (I'm not kidding they are like $2K each new).

MattL - the C25/250 Mission Bay fleet will give any Association member a day sailing anytime you are in town.

DougC - you can rent a C250 here in Mission Bay $85 for 2 hours. You can rent 4 hours, 8 hours and overnight as well. They are rigged and ready to go.

"PS. I am the new Tell Tail editor, Frank Hopper is the new Mainsheet Editor."

OOOPs Sorry about that, Jim.....won't happen again. The whole message took me awhile to put together and I was concerned about my spelling and grammer more (my wife's an English teacher) and relearning how to place pictures in a message than "the facts".
And I even changed the little picture below. Hey, I learned how to change the size of my picture from small to the bigger size, too!!!

Rent a boat in San Diego? Why when all you've got to do is get in touch with me, Jim, and now, Mike for a sail in Mission Bay or off the coast of San Diego? And it's FREEEEEE! (although we might have you chip in for drinks, etc. )

Yes, Matt, a free ride and a lesson. You found the little weener dog in the picture. Now find the white baseball cap. Below that you will find our new Tell Tail editor, Jim **. If you find Jim you get a free drink or a free racing lesson on Jim's boat, whichever you choose at the time.
(** I figured I needed to type this one more time so I would remember Jim is volunteering his time as Tell Tail Editor, right Jim?)
Sailing again tomorrow.....

I wish I wish I could come to the nationals in 04 but, alas, I am without a trailer or tow vehicle and with limited time off.

Gary and I are working to form a fleet here in San Diego/Mission bay and will shoot for hosting the Nationals ourselves in a couple of years. Meanwhile we'll host a C25/250 Catalina Cruise this August.

I am having so much fun with the little boat and with this group, volunteering is a pleasure.

Re: Cruise in August. Early August, right Jim? If it gets to the middle of August then we go back to school and miss part of it.

August, do I hear August. Since my wife got the summer school job at the local community college. She is the English teacher, not me, that's why my posts have so many errors. The Columbia is out. San Diego, now I have to talk to her about that one. Tell me more about this and perhaps I won't need a ride but possible a place to tie up.
I wish I had that brace on my stanchion. Due to a tequila mishapp I now have a bent one on my boat. We don't need to persue that topic anymore.

"Due to a tequila mishap I now have a bent one on my boat."

Interesting... wandering around the marnia, I've noticed that quite a few boats have slightly bent 'gateway' stanchions (including mine)... IMHO that brace is a darn good idea.

Pretty sure it's not stock. I have never seen another C25 with one.

Somewhere around August 1 we will leave Mission Bay for a 2 week cruise to Catalina Island. The San Diego "fleet" will help any and all who trailer here. We will arrange secure parking for the rigs. There is a free anchorage in Mission Bay, or you may be able to get a guest slip. Launch ramps are free. The trip will be Mission Bay - Oceanside - Dana Point - Two Harbors - Catalina harbor - sail around the island. I may make a side trip to Marina del Rey. A day trip to Santa Barbara island is possible. Perhaps overnight sail directly back or Avalon - Dana Point - Mission Bay.

Everyone is welcome (even Hunters and Macgregors or bigger boats). Kids and dogs highly desired. You can start anywhere in Southern Cal and meet up.

Where are you from?

Jim,
After posting last night I mentioned it to my wife, she sounded very positive.
We are in central CA, Atwater; about two hours from SF, two hours from Yosemite, less than an hour from Fresno, pretty close to the center of the state. I'll print out your intenerary for my wife, and pass it on to the new cruising director of our club and see if anyone else would like to make the jaunt.
We keep the boat, during the summer, at lake Yosemite, just out side of Merced about 100 feet from the site of the new UC being built.
Thanks for the info.

Jim, that looks the exact spot we tied to the last time we were there for a rendevous. We've got pictures somewhere. The picture on the photos page is of our boat there that weekend.

In case anyone is interested (especially if you can't do 2 full weeks), the closest boat ramp to Catalina (about 4 - 5 hours) is in San Pedro at Cabrillo Beach (map).
