I have finally decided to go back with the lantern that came with my boat, installed by the previous owner. I am in the process of cleaning it up and looking for the glass cover, that was gone at purchase time. What have you used to clean brass. I have tried Brasso, and it is not getting all of the stains off the brass. thanks for the input. dan 86 fk/tr

I like NEVR-DULL to clean things up and make them shine.

The sihngle best product that I've used is "MAAS". Unlike Brasso or Never Dull, it will not scratch the brass. It's also great for stainless.
Cheers,

Are you sure there's not a clear varnish-like coat on the brass that has discolored? Just an idea.

Dan:

I've used NEVR DULL, Brasso and Brite Boy. On brass, they all work about the same (slowly).

However, I just refinished an old desk with a bunch of heavy brass drawer-pulls with about 50 years worth of thick tarnish and knew using the above chemical polishers alone would take a long time. So I used Brite Boy, and threw in a little mechanical help, by scrubbing it on with some fine bronze wool. This seemed to work a bit better than any of the "polishers" listed above used alone. While the bronze wool works by obviously "scratching" the brass, the scratches produced by a fine grade (00 or finer) were not noticable to me. If you go this route, you could test a spot on the bottom of the lamp to see if the results are acceptable.
