I am wondering if anyone out there has installed a rams head for reefing. I was not thrilled with the Jiffy reefing system last summer and was thinking of adding a rams head and doing the traditional tie down from the reef points. Anyone done this? Willy
We tried it this summer after reading the thread Arlyn noted. We like the concept since the jiffy reefing on the C250 has so much friction, but found it hard to get the reef point gromet over the "reefing hook". We're going to try to improve the setup this year.
I have not tried the reef hook... but I did give up on single line reefing on my first reef point when I discovered that the second which I'd set up as a double line was much easier to set.
Here's a link to another recent discussion involving reef hooks that was started by Frank complete with some good pictures. I've received my hook from Defender, but haven't installed it yet. For me, anything to improve the ease and speed of reefing is worth it.
I did put a hook on, but found that I couldn't get the cringles on....for now I have a small loop tied to the cringles which hook on to the hook. I do have a mast-gate mod which I still have to install, and this will possibly allow the whole thing to come down further and let me get the cringles on the hook.......

The hook may not fit within the boom assembly on all 250s. I was excited about the idea and ran out and bought a hook at West Marine only to find it a spec to tight. The only solution was to get a 1/2 inch longer clevis pin and place the hook outside the boom (starboard side). I couldn't get the cringle on no way no how. Hmmm...Calling Oscar..is this a similar scenario? I wonder then if I put it back on with your loops if that would work?!
I was able to mount the hook only after taking it to the grinding wheel and shaping it till it fit. I think, in the picture above, that the slides between the boom and the reef cringle have been removed......in that case I'm not sure if there's any effort/time saving. Right now I use the loop. However I have added a mast plate with eyes, two triple organizers and two triple stoppers, so next trip I'm going to play with some line reefing again.
Oscar; The boom pictured in SailGal's post is on my boat. I don't have to remove any sail slugs to put in either the first or second reef. I wonder what the difference is between your sail and mine, that you need to remove slugs. It may be in the placement of the reef cringles. I don't have much trouble putting the reef cringle onto the hook, but might be tempted to trim the horn down a bit to make the process easier. I think that it's faster putting the reef in using the hook, but more importantly, the sail shape is much better using the hook that with the single line system. Bill, c250wb Serendipity
