This reminds me of a similar vessel that was built a few years ago by Kenichi Horie. It was about 25' long and made of about 550 (empty) aluminum beer kegs welded together in the shape of a sailboat hull. Mr. Horie proposed to sail this creation from San Francisco across the North Pacific to Japan - a distance of more than 5000 nm. I never heard if he actually went ahead with the voyage, though.

My father in law tells the story about his Sea Bee days in Midway where he made a catamaran out of 55 gallon drums. With out any kind of centerboard couldn't get it to turn or go into the wind very well. He also said that he got into a bit of trouble because the officers thought it was an attempt to go awol, they made him take it appart.
