Removing Old Sealant???

I pulled off all the old teak on my boat now I need to clean the area to reseal. I talked to the previous owner and he said he used a marine silicone sealant. Is there anything that will desolve this to clean the area? Any help on this will be great!

A good plastic scraper and some MEK. Once a surface has been contaminated by silicone its hard to get rid of it.

I too pulled my teak this weekend. I had a few broken pieces around the companion way. Behind the wood looks like some kind of putty?
I guess this putty was used to seal the back of the wood.
Is this the preferred way to seal behind the back of the wood

Here's a great example of why I will never use silicone sealant on anything I know I will have take apart and reseal down the road. Sorry, sharp tools, time and patience are the only formula I know of for removing silicone.

I've found that after scraping off the bulk pieces, that rubbing with a rough cloth will often "peel off" the residue.

Thanks for the information. It can't be over stated what a great asset this forum is and the people who use it. I also can't believe the wealth of knowledge that can be found at the old forum.

i removed the teak this past summer. cleaned the area with acetone after using a razor blade scraper. be careful not to chip the gelcoat with the corner of the blade. then used te-ka cleaner on the teak and coated with three coats of cetol. re installed t
