I am planning a trip with my C-25 on the Erie Canal from Lake Champlain. The bridge heights range from a low of 15.5 feet to 21 feet. I want to carry the mast to be used later when I reach Lake Ontario. Has anyone devised a system to hold the mast up over the boat and still be able to move comfortably around the boat while motoring along?
What is the height of the C-25 above the waterline?
Thanks,
Bob

Additional gudgeons outboard of the rudder gudgeons with a mast up, variations on my 4x4 plastic fence post for the mast step and the pulpit. In my sig you see that my mast is nicely above the fray. http://www.catalina25-250.org/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=5359
When yopu are going down the canal, east to west, let me know when you will be near lock 8. One of our homes and my office is less than a mile from there and we would enjoy having the opportunity to get to know you.

Frank - Can you still steer like this?
We used to have a 2x8 across both the stern pulpit and the bow pulpit when we were on the hard with an 2x4 box over the tabernacle. The mast was centered over the boat resting on these three items, lashed to each with spare line. The Wood was held onto the pulpits with 4 U bolts. You might be able to rig something similar, only putting the mast on the side of the boat without the engine. This would give you access to the anchor locker, ability to open the companionway hatch and a partially open cockpit.
With the new gudgeons added out board of the rudder gudgeons you would be able to steer. This is the same set-up as the mast up rig in a thread on the 250 forum now.
If you could let the mast stick out the back you could probably get by with the aft mast-up and the mast step support alone. I think the three support system would be best.
By the way - take cash and have someplace to stow it on your boat (mini safe or lockbox). My buddy did that trip in his Morgan 38 - four years ago. Seems most of the places along the canal don't really operate very well with the plastic currency. You do have the added benefit that you don't have to have some guy with a crane put your stick in for you, but there are always incidental expenses along the way.
