With much repect to Chip, I recently took sailing lessons at THE Ocean SAiling Academy in CHarleston and I could not have had a more pleasant experience. The company is owned and operated by a young couple about to be married. Everyone was more than professional and courteous as well as being tremendous sailors. They have a good fleet of boats and offer classes from basic keel boat through Ocean passage. I honestly could not have had a better experience. <hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote"> You should print this thread and take it to the school, they have some damage control to do here.

Nathan,
Welcome to the forum!
Are you chompin' at the bit while waiting for your boat?
well, i am glad that you had a favorable experience with them. i will not say any names, but one of the owners of that company did live 2 doors down from me 3 years ago. i do not have any experience with him on a business level, but on a personal level, he left alot to be desired (to put it mildly). his ex-wife became and still is a friend of mine, and some of the stories she shared with me are just terrible. i will not say anything else about it, because i dont think it is proper to drag someone's name through the mud when they are not present to defend themselves. i will just restate the fact that i would rather learn to sail from reading bubble gum cards than pay that guy to teach me.
nalderson, congrats on your new purchase. i am assuming that you bought your boat through the hull company here in charleston. i have had good experiences with them in years past. if you have any problems with your boat, you should deal with them or with UK sailmakers (located in the same building at the city marina). i dont know where you are planning on keeping your boat. if you plan on keeping it in the water, i would highly recommend the cooper river marina (just north of the bridges at the bottom of the old naval base). my boat has been there for three years now. they have concrete piers, shorepower and water hook-ups, and clean restroom/shower/laundry facilities. they are also the cheapest marina within miles of charleston harbor. i am paying less that ten bucks a foot per month to keep my boat there. i would not dream of keeping my boat anywhere else. you may want to look into the CRM. there are 5 or 6 catalina 25s there, as well as a few larger catalinas. as for your offer to crew, i would be glad to go out on the water with you, either on my boat or yours. this year will be my 5th season sailing this wonderful harbor. you can contact me via email at civwarchastours@bellsouth.net if you like. good luck to you!
ps. i hope that i did not offend anyone with my post about the ocean sailing academy. i was asked what i thought of them, and i gave my honest opinion based on my experience with the owner.
Thanks for the welcome! Also, I am definately chomping at the bit to get my boat. As Chip said in his original post you can pretty much sail year around here in Charleston so I am eager to get out on the water in my own boat. I sailed everyday last week, including one day on a J-24 when there were steady 20-25 mph winds and gusts over 30. The President was in town (marina and certain parts of the harbor were shut down)thus we could not get back into the marina making for quite an interesting and damp day, but alot of fun. Nothing like practicing man over board drills over and over and over in conditions like that!
No probelm with the OSA thing. Everyone should call it like they see it. I know the person that you are referring to and I have to say that I had very little interaction with him.
Also, you are exactly right....I did buy the boat from the Hull company. They have been straight shooters so far. Thanks for the the tip with UK sails.
Its funny that you bring up CRM, I'm on my way out there today to have a look around. I'm 99% sure this is where I'll have my boat.
With regards to sailing together, I'll definately give you an e-mail. I'd like to have a sail on a Cat 25 and would definately like to have you out on my boat when it arrives. I would appreciate any input that you could give.
Chip, the video is a gas. I hear a Valkyrian soundtrack. Thanks for the look into Spring, it's snowing here in northern Minnesota for the tenth straight day. Did you get a bunch of seawater below?
reuben, we did get some seawater down below. when we left the slip, the bilge had about a 1/2 inch of water in it. when we returned, we probably had 2 inches in there. as you could tell with the video, it was a bumpy ride, and the rail was in the water for a good part of the day. some of the water in the bilge did slosh out, and the cabin sole was a bit wet when we returned. we had the companionway hatch slid all the way back, so there was very little if any spray that entered from above. it all apparently came from the bilge. luckily for me i had removed my carpet (more of a runner, really) to wash it several days before, so it was only plastic that got wet. the whole mess was easily cleaned up with a big sponge. i am very pleased that so many of you have enjoyed viewing the video. i am amazed at how many views this post has gotten over the past week. i will be sure to post more videos for you guys in the near future.
Let's see. Two sailors from Charleston gabbing on this thread, alone. One with a slip and one looking. The conversation sounded like the beginning of a fleet, And then our earstwhile videographer mentions others c25 at the very same marina that he's at. That makes 6 or 7, and we could have a good fleet.
Guys, I encourage you to starting that way, and with the other bopat owners - ya got a good thing going!
I too welcome you to fleet and am looking forward to your stories as start sailing your very own 250. Hope delivery works out as promised, and hope you enjoy being part of our family here.
Chip, that is an absolutely awesome video! I don't think I have missed a day of going back to see it again since it came out. If you have more, it would be great. It's all ice and snow up here so it really gets the blood pumping to see someone out there doin' it!
