I have a leaky Bomar trapezoidal hatch on my 89. It has a stupid, in my opinion, design for the latches where the outer part of the latch actually rotates with the handle, and there is a small O ring which is supposed to seal out the elements. The hole cut in the plexiglass is a little too large, and only the outer edge of the O ring touches the plexiglass. I went to the local Old Fashioned hardware store (remember them-Home Despot is putting them out of business) and bought some thicker rings, maybe that will help. I'll put a little waterproof plumbers grease on the ring so it will slide on the plexiglass easier, hopefully the grease won't cause the ring to swell and deteriorate. I also got a new rubber hatch seal from Catalina Direct, it has a larger cross section than the original, couldn't hurt, I hope. Anybody else have this leak, and if so, what did you do. I'll keep you posted as to how this fix works.
Frank - My boat is identical to yours, and while I don't have any leaks at the moment, the plexiglass in the foredeck hatch and portlights is showing a lot of crazing and is turning cloudy from 14 years of UV exposure. So I expect to have to replace them in the not-to-distant future. Do you know if replacements are still available?
I have a 90 WK/TR with the same problem. At the end of last season I applied some sealant around the outer edge of the hatch. Haven't been able to field test it yet but will post an udpate wit pics if it works.
Gosh, with a hull number of 5900, my 89 must be ancient.
I just put together the latches (my fingers are frozen too) and maybe the larger gague O rings will work. Talk to Lindsey at Catalina Direct. If there are parts available, she would be able to help you. Back in the 80's the back window of my pickup camper top broke. I made a plywood template and took it to a plastics fabricator in Atlanta. He made me a new window out of some SAR plastic, which means Scratch and Abrasion Resistant. I think it had some UV properties too as it stayed in pretty good shape for about 6 years until a lady ran a stopsign and totalled my truck. I wonder if you have a plastics fabricator in your area who can match your window. My window is completely scratch and craze free (except for the crazy captain) When the weather warms up I'll completely remove the hatch frame and rebed it to the boat, and re seal the plastic too.
