I have noticed a large number of spider cracks in the gelcoat around the lower rudder grunion on my 78 c25. I have looked at the inner side and that seems ok. I have looked at number c25 at my drydock and noticed that they all seem to have cracks to some degree more or less than mine. My question is one has anyone ever heard of the lower grunion actually pulling out of the transom, (ie) an actuall failure of the structual glass in the transom; Two, has anyone reinforced their transom at that point if needed I'm torn between a teak backing or a build up of glass on the inner side and a repair to the gelcoat.
osmepneo has the same kinds of spider cracks you discribed. Previously (on an other boat) I filled them with an epoxy mixture and sanded and smoothed them out.
Dave, my 1984 may be set up differently, but you you should be able to remove the hatch at the back of your quarterberth to see that the bolts from your gudgeons are threaded through a thick bronze bar which is glassed into the transom with nuts screwed onto the end. It would take a massive problem to tear this whole assembly out, though it's worth checking from time to time.
The upper gudgeon, unfortunately, can't be seen directly unless you install an access plate in the transom or are really clever with a flashlight and mirror...
I had a similar pattern of cracks around the lower gudgeon of my 1979 C-25. In my case, I strongly suspect it was caused by the previous owner running aground with the swing keel all the way up, and/or allowing the rudder to bump bottom at low tide where he docked along a busy canal. A few years after I got the boat, the lower pintle pin crumbled without warning from crevice corrosion.
I have upgraded both my pintles and gudgeons to the latest heavy duty items from Catalina Yachts. While installing the new parts, I installed a 4" Beckson plate in the cockpit which allowed me to add fiberglass and epoxy backing plates inside the transom. I also reinforced the pintle mount holes in the rudder with poured in place epoxy and fiberglass bushings.
For info on the "grunion" (fish), try this link -- Grunion Run. I got a kick out of the typo because viewing the orgy of the grunion runs is a pretty popular pastime around here.
