I have just purchased a Garhuer Motor Mount and wanted to share the good news. It is an exact replacement fit to "Kije" our 1984 fin keel Catalina 25. All dimensions are the same accept that it is a much better motor mount. Two springs instead of one and much heavier stainless steel. The bracket has double wall steel in the handle sides, plus a much larger handle to grab on to. The motor plate is larger (to accomodate the new and larger 2 and 4 cycle motors) and it rated at 125 lbs. The plate is white delron plastic. It is available from Garhauer Marine (the orginal supplier to Catalina) via online order. Their address is <garhauermarine.com> Use the search engine that comes up on their site and type in motor mount. It is called the OB 125 and sells for $170.50. They did not add extra for shipping. The exciting discovery is that West Marine and other suppliers do not seem to carry this mount. The folks at Garhauer are very helpful and seem to operate a small and personal business. They have, of course been Catalina Suppliers for many years.
Thank you for the welcome ! I am a long time Catalina 25 owner (sixteen years same boat) and have followed "Sailors Forum" for years. I am a newbie at posts, however. I am glad to hear you new Garhauer has worked well. The springs seem so strong that I think I mught be pushing our 8hp Johnson Sailmaster down to engage. How do you find that, and the lift side of the Garhauer in terms of weight/friction/ease of use?
Thank you for the compliment on the sculpture on the home page link! It is much appreciated. The 1997 pieces are from materials from some of our offshore islands along the Maine coast and are defintely influenced by the process of sailing. The work painted pink is from my more outrageous side.
I'm even more glad that after sixteen years of ownership that you've decided to join the forum, and hopefully share your valuable knowledge on sailing and Catalina 25 ownership.
Regarding your follow up question on my new Garhauer motor mount, in its current brand new condition I am really having to push down my 8hp Evinrude two-cycle to engage, and then REALLY having to push down on the handle to disengage. However, once disengaged the springs practically lift the motor by themselves. So, I'll definitely take the break-in period inconveniences, since I don't anticipate ever having to replace the mount again.

After 16 years you must have a wealth of knowledge to share with us, please do. Oh and by the way, the art is cool and all of that but how could you have a space like that and not have it filled with sailboat stuff after 16 years? Inconceivable!

Goose Nest Ledge is about a grounding some years ago. Whaleboat, the counterbalance of keel to wind.....the visual memory lodged in sculptural form.

Hi Frank,
Thank you for the welcome. The motor is a 1987 Johnson Sailmaster (extra long shaft) 2 cycle. The manual lists the weight at 64 lbs. It sure feels heavier though. I think JB has it just right that some pushing to lower during the break in period will be just fine. I am anxious to experience the "popping up" on the lifting of the motor.
Gary the reason I asked about your motor weight is that I mounted a 108 lb honda on one of those new mounts, and it wouldn't lift it worth a darn. Garhauer is supposedly working on this problem. I now use the super mongo salt water Garelick mount. I'm glad it worked out for you. Let's hear from you some more
The mount installed very easily; same holes, no drilling! And its very well balanced with my old Nissan 8hp. Just a gentle push down to get it there, and it pops right back up when released....sweet!

BTW - my CD manual shows it as about $50 more.

Phredde,
That is good news ! Same holes, no drilling was the appeal for me as well. And, I forgot to mention that I did like the old Garhauer because the clearances all worked. That is the depth of immersion and the ability to tip and lock the motor are all identical. A few years ago when I purchased a new 2 cycle Johnson Sailmaster it was enough larger in the motor crown area that it was very close to not tipping up completely out of the water while underway.
But, the best new feature for me is that all bushings are bronze, instead of the plastic / fiber bushings that over almost 20 years in the sun were pretty cracked. They did make me uneasy. I now feel ready for another 20 or more with this mount. So, thanks for the very positive report on the lifting side. I am looking forward to...."sweet" !!
