I just got the news...I thought I'd share. I've officially been approved to move into a new marina Al Larson Marina. I'm excited because it cuts at least 1/2 hour off the trip under motor from my slip to LA Lighthouse (entrance to LA Harbor), and thus I can be here 1/2 hour earlier...

I have always been a little envious of other's quick access to the ocean, but alternatives to my current marina were usually too expensive, too far away, etc. My quest to find a different place started when my current marina, Holiday Harbor Wilmington, deep within the bowels of LA Harbor and previously the least expensive spot in LA County, started significantly raising slip fees with the promise of doing major upgrades to their aging docks. However, no changes have been made (other than the size of the check I write each month) and they increased their rates again a couple months ago.

My new neighbors are a couple major container shipping terminals, a big (150'+) drydock facility, a commercial fishing fleet and all the nice folks residing at Terminal Island Federal Penitentiary. While that may not sound so nice, it's not far from home, the price is reasonable and it's the closest mainland marina to one of my favorite places on the planet...I'm happy.

It sounds great to me!
I am glad that I spent the winter leading my stuff back, I sure envy how clean and uncluttered your deck looks.

I hope that you can meet the San Diego - Mission Bay fleet (plus friends) for our Catalina Island cruise Aug 2 through 19. Details to come, but boat-in beach camping, Two Harbors, Emerald Bay, Catalina Harbor, possible daysail to Santa Barbara Island, and island circumnavigation is planned. Overnight stops at Dana Point. Families, kids, dogs, beach toys, and everyone on your dock is welcome (even non Catalinas). We may even have a power boat along.

Only C25/C250s will be in the racing classes.

I've learned that as I age it is important to eliminate hassle from my recreational activity. When I dry sailed a boat, it was a hassle moving the boat to the hoist, lifting it up and putting her in the water. So, I got a boat that I moored and needed a tender to get sailing. That was an improvement but became a hassle, especially if the tender service wasn't running. Had to get a tin boat, go to the mooring, yada, yada, yada. Then I relocated and put the boat on a dock. Easy access to good sailing water, hassles reduced.

It sounds to me, Richard, that's what you've done. Good move. And, I'm sure you will enjoy your boat more!

Yes -- but to be honest I'll miss the ride through the harbor because there were always interesting things to watch -- tugs working the big ships, containers being unloaded, cruise ships coming/going, the Lane Victory, Coast Guard patrols, fireboat practices, etc. The kids liked watching that stuff, too. But now each time out I get to watch the "fellas" playing basketball in the prison yard (carefull to keep appropriate distance so the tower guards don't get nervous)!

Jim -- the trip is on my tentative summer schedule, although I'll probably just head straight to the island from here.

Re: clean decks

I'm probably alone on this, but I really like a simple, clean deck. I've been on a couple racing boats which had all sorts of winches, blocks, clutches, lines led aft, etc. and it drove me nuts. That picture is a few years old. I've since removed that one line lead to the cockpit. I've also got no winch on the cabintop or mast (instead use the "swigging" method -- I think that's what it's called). Simple is beautiful.

To balance things a bit, however, I've still got the jib furling line led aft, but it's routed somewhat out of the way, along the stantion bases.
