In preparation for Spring I want to do something with my super ratty looking mainsail. My options are:
a) Have it cleaned and spruced at http://www.sailcare.com/ b) Find one of you that wants to sell me a used sail
I don't race so it seems foolish (and out of budget) to buy a new sail.
Has anyone used SailCare? Good/bad experiences?<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote">
Trent,
Personally, I don't know if I would spend the dollars refurbishing a "super ratty looking mainsail" because just how many years can this add to your already 21 year old sail which may be blown out and stretched?
Additionally, finding an inexpensive good used sail might be difficult, although not impossible(I did it last season, but that was a very unique situation), since most non-racers who replace a sail do so because they are no longer serviceable. With new mains for C25's starting at $479.00, I don't know if I would spend a hundred or two on something that someone else discarded. It just might be worth biting the bullet and going for new.
And finally, I know you are not a racer, but it may not be that foolish to buy a new sail because even for a casual sailor, like me, performance enhances enjoyment. Case in point...Last season I briefly pulled up alongside another C25 on the same tack out on open water. I said "briefly" because my C25 with newer sails flew past them and their original 22 year old leech fluttering sails as if they were dragging several anchors. As I flew by, they jokingly asked if I had the motor turned on!
Trent, I had my main cleaned by SailCare and it came out looking great with a nice stiffness in the fabric. The sail was in reasonably good shape to begin with but dirty. Sail Care wanted to do some repairwork on the sail that would have added another $150 to the $100 it cost me to have it cleaned. I opted to have the sail cleaned only. If your sail is in tattered condition, the cost of cleaning and repair is, in my opinion, not worth it since you'll probably be halfway to the cost of a new sail. (My main was not an original 20 year old Catalina sail so it wasn't blown out.)
