I replaced all standing rigging except my backstay today. The forestay and backstay are fully threaded but the open part of the turn buckles are vacant. It was a bear getting the forestay onto the stem fitting. I am of the opinion that less than fully threaded is unacceptable so we are barely ok. How much does new rigging stretch? I will hang the boom tomorrow. it is going to be fun to play with routing the new running rigging.
Frank - the turnbuckles DON'T have to be fully threaded. On "TSU" I carry a full 8" - 10" of forestay sag. It makes the jib/genoa much more powerful, and if you need it tighter (if the wind pipes up) you just crank on the backstay adjuster. Derek
So, what's the big deal about getting the stick up?
osmepneo's has been up all winter. And, the sails are bent, too. I broke two ribs, one port, one starboard last fall and still had to get the boat covered for winter. It took everything I had to climb up the ladder and get her covered. Taking sails off was not an option.
Derek, my marina operator has a terrible time raising the mast , actually connecting the forestay, because the do has it tensioned with very little slack. Next time I have him take it down, I could ease the tension, and make adjustment with the back stay. Thanks for the words of wisdom!
