Some time ago there was some discussion on rudder failure resulting in the rudder splitting in half. I assume the failure occurs at the lower pintle causing the lower half of the rudder to separate from the upper. Is this so? Mine seems to be in pretty

Mike - the usual split is vertical - water gets into the core between the two "clamshell" halves, swells the core and forces them apart. I've never had the problem but my 2nd generation rudder (a C25) is only 7 years old!

I'm glad to hear that. The clamshell, as you call it, seemed to be tight. Just to be safe, I reglassed using West System epoxy the whole outter edge of the rudder. I think I'm in good shape.
