I am actually still considering the '86 Catalina 25 about which I wrote in here a little while ago.
I was told that the main sail of it is original from '86 but has been refurbished in 2003. What does it mean to refurbish a sail? Will this help to make it last a while?
Joe, I had the 110 on our Catalina 22 refurbished by SailCare and I thought they did a great job. They wash it, repair stitching, put the resins back in the sail and hip it back to you. It held up really well for many years of use. I am sure SailCare has a web site, you could check on this by doing a google search. Hope this helps!
Thanks for your comments! I found their web site and it looks like they are using a great process to refurbish sails. I will have to figure out how and where the sellers of the 25 had the refurbishment done.
I just pondered the same issue with my sails. I have an 88 that has been used quite a bit. In my case the sail shape was so blown out that no ammount of sail-care would help it. I just hung the new main yesterday and have to say it was $500 well spent. The sail is beautiful. I am going to use the old main for and anchor riding sail and some scraps. If your sail is not blown out than it should work.
I'm not sure what the expected lifespan is for an OEM sail because a lot depends on how the sail was used (raced, daysailed in light winds,...etc), how often (seasonal, year round, every other year,...etc), and the care they receieved, but if a sail has been put through just average use for 18 years, I just don't know if it would be worth sinking a couple of hundred in it to make it look good.
For folks on a budget that want replacement or "extra" sails, you might try a used sail brokerage like "Bacon & Associates" (http://www.baconsails.com/). I bought a spinnaker from them for a previous boat and it was money well spent. Sometimes they have brand new sails that dealers or manufacturers orders but then cancelled the order. Just need your dimensions and then go look for sails.....
