I was working on getting the boat ready to splash and noticed a small bit of bottom paint flaking off the side of the keel. Attacking it with a putty knife it became much bigger, chunks of fiberglass coming off and some white fairing compound. When all was said and done I have a 16" diameter area with a big dimple (4" dia x 3/4" deep) in the middle, but still a coating of epoxy on the surface (looks like a PO tried an encapsulation attempt). What should I fill and fair this dimple with? Bondo? Epoxy with fairing additive (micro-balloons or whatever)? Or whatever I have on hand, it doesn't matter?
I've posted my thorough iron keel encapsulation procedure here before. Let me know if it's time for a rerun. As for your immediate problem, I's suggest avoiding Bondo below the waterline. for keel and bottom fairing, I use WEST epoxy thickened with either microballoons or WEST fairing additive (#407 or #410?).
Thanks, Leon! I think that's the 'whatever I have on hand' and it didn't occur to me until after I posted.
Maybe repost your encapsulation procedure sometime before next winter. I'm dreaming that I'm going to drop the keel, put in new bolts, check the keel stub, sandblast the cast iron and epoxy encapsulate it next winter.
