Does anyone have an electric 12V signal horn installed on their boat?
Even though I carry both a can air horn and a lung powered brass horn on my boat, I've toyed wih the idea of installing an electric horn and having the button located somewhere in the cockpit, probably in one of the coaming boxes.
Has anyone installed an electric horn and if so, where did you mount the horn and button?
Guess you're not getting any takers on that one. I've mulled that over too. Possible spot for horn maybe just in front of mast. Saw a horn that was shaped sort of like a nautilus shell that looked like it would fit there. What I'd really like to do would be to find or make a manual horn that would work by compressing air as with a bicycle pump. No drain on batts. and reliable. Currently have a cannister and a pump up bottle horn. It's a bummer when noone want to talk to you.
Just pretend you're driving in NYC, you gotta send a message . . .
This reminds me of the time the president of our company hit a windsurfer with his Cal 22 (windsurfer had right-of-way.) He felt really bad and was quite embarrassed, so I got him a pair of small vinyl adhesive silhouettes of a windsurfer to apply on his coamings - cheered him right up !
Do a fair amount of sailing in limited visibility here on SF Bay at times. Have had occasion to need the horn, like when I got beeped at by an exiting sailboat motoring out of the channel as I was coming in at night and still fiddling with lines and stuff. It would be nice to have horn readily available. In this case I didn't bother to answer the beep as my horn was stowed in the cockpit cubbies and by the time I fished it out it would have been too late. Really, it's a seamanship issue and not motorboaty at all.
I'm not challenging the necessity of signaling, rather, I guess I've been conditioned. I'm use to sail boats signaling with compressed air horns, bells and even whistles. If there were sail and power boats in the area and one signaled me with a 12 volt horn I'd assume it the power boat . . .
