I kept my gas receipts on my trip back from the Keys and wrote my odometer milage on them. From that I calculated that I got 8.5 miles per gallon. YOUCH!!!!!!!!!!! 240 bucks for gas one way. OOH, that hurts.
I drive a full size Chevy Silverado 99 model 4wd with 5.3 liter gas V8 and 3.73 rear axle.
I did drive about 70 mph the whole way on the interstate
I'm sure by now the folks with Diesels are thumping their chests and ready to tell me about their vehicles
If they ever come out with a non noisy, non smelly Diesel, I MAY consider one. But in the meantime, it's just not for me for my once or twice a year trip with the boat. I can only afford one vehicle at a time. I would like to have a higher geared rear end on my next truck though.

If you have a 4:10 rear end, that is definately hurting your fuel economy, but it does help the truck pull a heavy trailering load with less stress on the drivetrain.

When I came back from Virginia last September with the new boat, I got 13.5 mpg average (Dodge Cummins Diesel, two wheel drive, regular cab) - that is with the additional weight of a cabover camper on the truck, total rig weight was 15,500 pounds as weighed on a truck scale. The two trips I have made to the San Juans, 1900 miles round trip towing the boat, but with a camper shell only instead of the full cabover camper, I got 15.5 mpg. The empty truck gets 20 mpg.
I have a 3.54 rear axle. If my truck had the 4:10 axle, my fuel economy would have been about 2 mpg less.

How to ruin the afterglow of a great vacation: Save the receipts and start calculating the dollars per whatever...

Frank, you know your figures don't justify changing trucks. Turn your attention to the fun you had--the gas money is spent. Otherwise, we're gonna have to take your vacation FOR you next time!

Hey Dave,
No way you will take my vacation FOR me. Maybe you can take it with me. The more boats the merrier to sail from Key West to the Marquesas and then Dry Tortugas. I figure in late April, early May.

The reason I reported this is that discussions come up every so often about tow vehicles. I'm not bummed out now about the gas bills, but when I was filling up the tank I was thinking Medeviel thoughts about OPEC. Of course when the Visa bill arrives........

I'm not getting a new truck soon, I only have 85000 miles on mine so it's only getting broken in.
Besides, I just spent 325 to have additional leaf springs put in the rear. Made a really big difference in the elimination of porpising, and squashing down of the rear of the truck. Money well spent.
I'll look for a new truck when I hit about 300k miles. Maybe by then they will invent a non noisy, non smelly diesel, but probably not.

Hey Frank, Thump, Thump!! I'm with Larry, only I have the extended cab and you are correct I can't sneak up on anybody. I don't notice any diesel odor, but then it is spring here in California and with all the allergies going full blast I can't smell anything anyway. Ford's new power stroke is very quiet. I have been told that if you take the noise out of a diesel you will take the power out. You certainly have a truck to do the job. Thanks for the report.
