We sprung for a bottom job after 4 years. The boat was pulled, and the bottom looked to be in good shape after a pressure washing. Except, the keel has a bunch of growths all over it. There are about 10, 3-4 inches around, and they protrude out a couple of inches. When you hit them with the grinder, they pop into a dust like cloud of rust. Any idea on what they could be, and how to prevent them in the future? The boat is a 1980 SR, fin keel.

Thanks.

Frank, Sounds like what happens to my cast iron swing keel. I don't know for sure but you may have a boat with an unencapsulated iron keel. I believe that later boats went to lead with a fiberglass covering. I am sure somebody with a fin keel will verify this.

Without seeing it.. likely rust bloom from water penetrating to the iron inside of the keel.

Epoxy sealing the keel surface will help prevent further deterioration. I suppose a fully 'bristol' repair would involve stipping, sandblasting and re-fairing the keel (that's a whole bunch of work).

I'd be inclined to just get the surface smooth and put an epoxy barrier coat on.

Clam is right... My '85 is glass-encapsulated lead, but in '80, the fins were cast iron with nothing much more than paint on them. Cast iron can sprout large "rust blooms" without actually losing that much iron. When you remove the blooms, you'll see some pitting, but nothing major. My slightly off-the-wall recommendation would be to sand as much of that rust off as you resonably can, and then coat each spot with a "rust reformer" before putting any barrier coat or other epoxy finish on the keel. You'll eventually get some more rust wherever anything nicks the finish, but there's no great harm in that. You have 1900 lbs of iron down there.
