Can anyone recommend a hands on course or loft that would teach sail making? I've already made a few small sails, but would like to flatten the learning curve by watching, rather than reading. Thank you. Hope to splash this weekend. Todd Frye.
Todd, you might try contacting Carol Hasse at Port Townsend Sails. www.porttownsendsails.com/ She offers several seminars during the year. The Admiral just completed her sail repair seminar this past weekend. Lots of hands-on. A little expensive ($300), but Marge really enjoyed it and thought it was well worth it. She is considering to take one of the other classes. Brion Toss Rigging (The Riggers Apprentice) is right there in the same building. I took his rigging class over the weekend also. Makes you look at your own rig with a more critical eye.
You might try picking up one of the Sailrite manuals. I made my first sail using them back in 1977. They are easy to read and guide you step by step through making whatever type of sail the manual is for. Start with a lightweight sail like a spinnaker or spinnaker staysail or drifter since they are the easiest to handle and sew. The Seminars sound like a fun thing to sit in on, but don't be afraid to simply start messing around. I bet you will end up with a good sail and have some fun in the process!! I think Sailrite has "kits" now that have all the panels computer drawn on the cloth. The more you have them do the less you save over just buying a sail however....
I picked up a sailrite LSZ-1 a couple of months ago. Present projects underway (New Sail Cover and new Dodger ) Sailrite has video or CD instuctional materials as well as printed instructions . They also sell kits for everything. I recomend their material. Check them out at www.sailrite,com
