I thought about rebuilding the old winch, but the new one was so much more heavy duty I just went for it. It looks like twice the winch compared to the old one. No wedge as far as I can tell. My guess is that a wedge helps the winch sit square to the steps and thus keeps the cable perpindicular to the centerline. I just bolted the winch up tight to the botrtom of the step and the cable seems to pull fine. Also installed new cable fitting to keel. A fresh hacksaw blade cut the cast iron pretty easily (half an hour). Since the new bolt can't back out I just used either white grease or boat-caulk on the threads; can't remember. Stephen Z.
My replacement ball was single pin. New winch had longer and more robust handle, MUCH easier to crank, winch is better made, worth every penny IMHO. Used tennis ball as uggested, works fine, recommended, Ron srsk Orion SW FL
