I have a Honda 9.9 hp with electronic start. I would like to extend the controls to the cockpit as I am too short to handle the motor and see over the bow while docking or performing other maneuvers. Does anyone know of a kit that extends the controls to the cockpit? I have a standard rig boat w/tiller steering.

Try your Honda outboard dealer. Your manufacturer usually makes cockpit controls for the motors they make.

Barring that, try any of the marine parts suppliers on the internet. They usually sell generic equipment for this purpose.

Being too cheap to spend the money on cockput controls, and not wanting to clutter the cockpit further, I came up with an inexpensive alternative. When I dock my Cat25, I am usually idling the motor in forward. The only thing I do is shift to neutral, back to forward, back to neutral, etc., until I'm just the right speed to dock. But my shift lever on the Suzuki 8 is an impossible reach behind the boat, and outboard. So I just cut a groove in a 3-foot(?) piece of 1" PVC, and attached it to the shift level on the motor, and it extends just onto the push-pit. This allows me to shift in and out of forward while standing and controlling the tiller. And when I lift the motor to sail, it just folds back out of the way.

Just a thought.

I know that it may seem more convenient to have all controls right at hand but as sailors with outboard auxillaries, we are at an advantage. We have the ability to direct the thrust our motors produce. Don't forget that when docking with nearly zero headway the rudder is fairly useless. When docking I usually sit with one hand on the Honda and one on the tiller. When approaching you can use directed thrust to align the boat or when comming up on the finger you can us directed reverse thrust to draw the stern in after the bow has been caught.

Using directed thrust can also make getting out of a slip easier especially in a crosswind.
