We meant to leave some cards for him to mail back but didn't have time. 7th fleet is going to be living vicariously thru him I guess....

Doug,
I saw him today still hard at work on the boat. He was rigging a radar reflector so maybe he's close.
Jim will probably post more info.

He's planning to leave tomorrow (Thursday). I'll see him this afternoon and drop off some postcards. It's a holiday for us Government types today.

Sal left for Hawaii on Windy Spirit, his venerable Cal - 28 this afternoon at 3 PM. He is sailing due south to Guadalupe Island, then to a point about 200 miles offshore of Turtle Bay (Baja). After that, he will run the rhumbline for Hilo.

Sal expects a 16 day passage. I am putting my money on 25 days. I strongly advised him to provision for 45 (declined).

Sal is carrying:

15 gallons water
10 gallons gas
5 HP Nissan 4 stroke long shaft with alternator
kayak
2 tiller pilots
3 batteries
36 watt solar panel
VHF
compass, depthfinder,
Stereo
3 headsails (smallest is 110%, very high cut)
1 main with 1 reef point
home made wind vane, never tested, built out of PVC and other scraps
2 portable GPS
pilot chart and chart for the Big Island
food and supplies (unknown quantity)
tools and a great ability to fix anything,
lots of experience in coastal sailing in any and all weather.

No bimini, dodger, EPIRB, liferaft, weather cloth, bed is a single sheet of foam (no lee cloth), stove is a single burner gymballed propane.

I copied charts for him of the major ports of refuge in Baja and I am basically holding his rudimentary float plan.

Boat is old, quite distressed, but he has beefed everything up to the best of his ability.

I expect Sal to survive, but be very uncomfortable and even miserable. He is leaving a wife and 17 and 14 year old sons behind. He expects to return to San Diego in a couple of months (or go on, who knows).

I talked with Sal around 9pm Wednesday night, shook his hand, wished him luck and good winds.
Four dock buddies there and his wife.
Several of us went and grabbed a few more emergency flares (he'd only 4) so now he has 12......he said that was plenty
Wish I had had more time to talk with him myself and try to figure out why he's doing this. I guess I'm just not that brave. There's alot of water out there. Columbus did something similar awhile back if I remember my history.
Note that in the picture JimB posted above that the water is flat. It sure wasn't that way last night when Jim and sailed 4 miles offshore heading (ironically) directly toward Hawaii.
Maybe we could all try finding satellite images of the Pacific where Sal will be sailing and keep and "eye" on him....

I think I'd be more concerned about the 10 gallons of gas. I carry more when I'm cruising Lake Erie.

Also, 16-25 days on the water with no bimini???...I hope he takes a tub or two of sunscreen!

I wish this guy all the luck, for both him and his family.

Sal is our friend on the L dock (where Fleet 7 is docked). Owner of a Cal 28, he is a hardcore sailor and often sails with us (his boat, our boats, doesn't matter).

Well give it a go Sal and the very best of fortunes to you. Some dream, some do. This dreamer wil be awaiting news of your exploits from the fleet 7 crew.

Wonder if he'll be needing crew for the return trip? What's air fair one way to Hawaii anyway ?????

Jim, for what it's worth, Sal said he'd added some water. He took 22 gallons

Everyone needs a break once in a while. Most of us take short breaks. A book, movie, a round of golf or a day on the Bay, or a fifth of booze.

Some people need a longer break. They go hiking on the Appalachian trail, or climb a mountain. Some want even more solitude than that. They go sailing on the big lake. Arrival time is so far away, there's no point in trying to pin it down to the week. Just bring a lot of beans and rice.

<blockquote id="quote"><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id="quote">quote:<hr height="1" noshade id="quote">[If I voluntarily left my family for a couple of months, my wife would tell me to keep on going!<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote">

Second half of November and December is always a rough time for me. I don't like the frenzied, pointless behaviour around me, and there is no escaping from it. (No need to retort with your opinions on that, my mind is made up.) Needless to say it affects my mood There is nowhere to hide, other than "out there". When I said maybe I'd go sailing next year, the Admiral thought it was not a bad idea.

Somehow the idea of a few weeks or more of peace and quiet, out there on a sailboat is a compelling idea.

Some day.......

On a final note, and the topic of how much do you need, I heard of a fellow who did this very trip. He followed the contrails of the jets overhead.

Looks to be perfect sailing weather: 10-20 knots, 8-10 foot seas, party cloudy. He's probably having the time of his life!

I think Sal should be at about 27N 125W. Today he is seeing 20 knots of wind and seas 9 to 14 feet.

He's going to taste some leather in the next few days.

Not a typo. I was once watching a boxing match. The guy in the ring was a rookie. He had never been in a pro fight. The announcer said "Well, he's going to taste some leather for the first time tonight. Let's see how he takes it!"

Pro fighters can't hit harder than us. The can just take a lot more punishment. Makes me think of Sal.

The gay pirates thing was very funny

I hope he kept a log.

Jim, if you talk to him ask him to write everything he can remember. Technically I can only submit C25/C250 stories but if we could write a great article I’ll bet we could get it into the Mainsheet.
28’ all the way to Hawaii. Great job.
