Which popular Northern California lakes (Clear, Don Pedro, Tahoe, others?) require reservations for slips/moorings during the summer? (probably all, I suppose 8( ). Which have good anchorages, rendering moorings and slips moot? Which are your favorite places to stay?
I've powerboated out of the Konocti resort on Clear Lake before. I didn't have trouble getting a slip on their dock.. but I had made a room/slip reservation in advance. The resort is a nice family-oriented place with swimming pools, restaurant, ice cream shop & etc. They usually have some sort of concert series going, using their amphitheater in the summer months. Launch ramp is free, slips $10/night parking is right there too.
Just might spend a long weekend there in mid-june myself.
There's also a state park with moorings, campsites, showers etc. that has been used by a lot of trailer-sailors from Humboldt Bay (haven't used it myself yet).
Clear Lake itself is big, has pretty good winds and a pretty setting. Downside.. the lake has a big algae bloom in mid-late summer and swimming is not very pleasant from mid July on, especially on the SE (downwind) end of the lake.
There's a fairly good sized trailer-sailer regatta (The Konocti Cup) that's held there in late April.
Folsom Lake has about 100 miles of shoreline with excellent boat camping (anchor out), and very clean, warm water for swimming June through August. There is a Marina with a fuel dock and pumpout, but no overnight guest slips, and the nearest grocery store is a couple miles away (no services other than the gas dock on the lake itself). Best wind conditions for sailing are spring through early summer, but after late June, the weather turns very hot and the wind isn't reliable. Lake Tahoe is surrounded by gorgeous scenery, but overnight boat camping is relatively expensive - it costs $35 to launch your boat at Tahoe Keys, and $10.00/day to park your trailer in teir lot. The water is EXTREMELY cold, even in late July, about 62ºF in the warmest, shallowest areas, so swimming requires the mid-set of a polar bear or penguin. Winds are generally westerly, and best for sailing between 2:00pm and sunset. Another area to consider is the Sacramento/San Joaquin River Delta. This has 1000 miles of waterways, with dozens of marinas to stop at, or an almost infinite choice of backwater areas to anchor out in for boat camping.
