Folks, I'm in the market for a trailer for my 78 SR SK and I'd like to buy an EZ Loader. When I look at the trailers VIN number is there some code or group of letters and numbers that will tell me the exact year, length, ext. of the trailer. I'd hate to pay for a 1995 trailer only later to find out it's a 1980. My state doesn't have titles for trailers so all I have is the owners word and the VIN.
I can't help you with your question about vin numbers and identifying the production year, but I suggest you not be too concerned about the age of the trailer. My 1981 EZ Loader, for example, is galvanized, has never been in salt water, has recently had the entire brake system completely replaced, has a nearly new winch and cable, all new lights, all new tires, all new fenders, and a new jack. It's in better condition than some trailers much newer.
Trailers for our boats are hard to find, so you won't have many to choose from. You almost have to take what you can find. Look at the condition of the trailer, and, if it's older and hasn't been maintained in good condition, take that into consideration in establishing your offering price, and plan on making improvements on it yourself. If you are a little mechanically inclined, parts are a little expensive, but it is very easy to replace everything on the trailer, except the frame. Everything just bolts on. Just be sure the frame is sound.
I looked at the registration for my trailer, and the VIN number (if correct) doesn't appear to be any help (#002125).
My trailer is almost identical to what Steve described ... it is a 1978 EZ Loader. I concur with Steve ... if you can get a trailer that works with your boat, GRAB IT, unless it is absolutely falling apart ... they are hard to come by!
Thanks Bill, but the problem is that in Ohio, we don't have titles and the owner has lost the registration card. I was able to find out from EZ Loader that VINs prior to 80 were 6 digit numbers assigned sequentially. After 80 they conform to a 15 digit scheme with a letter in one of the positions that determines the year. Finally after all the investigation we've found an answer to our problem. If it works and price seems right buy the trailer, and we did.
Thanks for all the help. Now on to the the standing A-Frame.
I was able to contact the owner of my boat and trailer of ten years earlier, and he found the title for the trailer in his records. Michigan does not require a title either, but I requested one for $5.00 more and got one.
