I have removed two old thru-hulls and am in the process of filling in the 2" holes left behind. My handy West System fiberglass repair manual states that for repairing cored hules, fill the hole with the appropriate core material then fill in with epoxy, but our hulls aren't cored.
Since our hulls aren't cored can I simply wet out then fill the holes with thickened epoxy or do I need to fill the 2" x 3/8" holes with some sort of substrate?
If it was me, I'd wan't to add some structure. I'd really grind down around the hole, say two inches outside of it, tapered, from 1/16th to about 1/8 , and then lay up increasing size glass patches, three or four layers. I'd then do the same on the inside, after filling the hole with epoxy and a filler mixed in. This way the plug is sandwiched in and cannot pop out....
