I have begun my mast wiring project, bought 100ft roll of marine grade wire on Ebay $22.
I was planning to pull the old wire out, while attaching a pull string to (1) end, this way I can pull the new wire thru. However no matter if I pull at the mast head or foot the old wire will not move (and yes I diconnected my lights). Did Catalina secure this wire some how? If I remove the masthead would it be easier? And if so how does this come off.
Catalina stuffed foam in the mast to keep things from rattling, it might impede pulling the wire through. I agree with albert, you should always have a line running through for future needs. Also, make sure your steaming light is disconnected too. I beleieve it was the same wire as the masthead.
When we rewired the mast last year (without dropping the mast) the new wire would not pull through all the way. The old foam "packing" pulled down and jammed. We packed old towels around the mast step and poured a pint of acetone down the mast using a small funnel - problem solved! Derek
I used my forestay as a snake to help fish some parachute cord through the mast when I installed conduit and rewired. Then I ran the ends of the cord through the conduit when I slipped it into the mast. The cord was plenty strong to pull the wires.
You may want to consider putting the conduit in the mast while you're doing the job.
