What size is the top step where the winch is mounted? My winch was moved forward a few inches by the PO and I would like to put it in the correct place (and stop dragging my heel on the handle pin)and replace the step due to numerous holes having been dilled through. I'm not at the boat or I'd take measurements myself. Also, would oak be the best replacement? Thanks, Sid

That is what matters, what ever it is, is what it is after that.

If I don't have It, how do I get It, and when I do get It, how will I know?!

The cable is at the front edge of the pvc pipe. In the original location it would be centered on the pipe. I don't know why the PO moved it forward. The top step of the companionway has multiple holes from moving the winch and I would feel safer if I replaced the step. I need dimensions for the step itself so I can buy replacement lumber now and fit it when I get to the boat. Sid
Are you sure about that Frank? On "TSU" I'm sure that the top step is no more than 14" x 7" - that's from memory and may be out by an inch either way. (She is an '81). Derek

measured with a Craftsman 25' tape. I bet you are recalling the actual ladder treads as opposed to the top step.
When I purchased a new winch.....the new one's fitting for the handle protrudes out from the vertical part of the step by about an inch and a half more than the original.
The original was completely flush. New one sticks out, so we cover it with a tennis ball so not to chop up one's heels.
The tennis ball is a good idea. I don't know why the winch is fwd from the original location. I'm more concerned about the integrity of the step than the part sticking out. The PO replaced the SK parts But I'm not sure about the winch. Sid
