Since we have no sail repair shops in NE Missouri,I am dragging a main sail with me to Florida next week in the hopes I can find a shop to put in a cringle.

Does anyone have any place they can recommend in the Melbourne/Coca Beach area I can contact that can get this done with a turn around time of about 5 days?

Many thanks,
Skip

Skip,

I'm located in Cocoa Beach. Here's who's in the yellow pages under Sailmakers:

Duay Marine Rigging/Sails, 4140 Rector Road, Cocoa, (321-)639-0665
{haven't used them, no opinion}

M & M Sails, 357 Imperial Bvd, Cape Canaveral, (321-)431-3304, (321-)784-0444
{haven't used them, no opinion}

Sails By Morgan, 229 Forrest Avenue, Cocoa, (321-)636-6333
That's Scott Morgan's retail storefront on the mainland. His loft is a couple miles east of there on Merritt Island.
{I find him expensive and difficult to deal with. He seems to know what he's doing with sails.}

South Sails, 101 Central Road, Indian Harbor Beach, (321-)777-9555
{If this is the folks I think it is, I have used them years ago, and was pleased.}

You could also call Banana River Marine, 1360 South Banana River Drive, Merritt Island, (321-)452-8622 and ask "Big Doug" where to take a sail locally for repair. "Big Doug" has been working on sailboats since he was old enough to crawl, and is a walking encyclopedia of boating information. He won't steer you wrong.

I'll try to ask around for some more in the next few days. You're welcome to contact me by phone at (321-)784-8406, via e-mail at <SissonL@MPInet.net>, or on this board.

Bad time of the year to try and get sail work done in a hurry. Most lofts here are booked up for several weeks during springtime. I did some sewing of my own last weekend when a seam thread let go on my genny. Figure I save a bit more money towards the bit I spent on my Sailrite LSZ-1. Good piece of equipment to have. Easy to use.

Leon--
Thanks for going to all that trouble to list all the sailmakers in the Cocoa area. Being an ex-Satellite Beach kid, I am kind of familiar with some of the locations you mentioned, especially Indian Harbour. I will be sure to give you a call if I need something.

Many thanks, Skip

For what it is worth--
I just got back from Florida, and while there I used Southsails as suggested by Leon. The guy did the work really quick, and really reasonable.
Got an invite from Leon to go for a sail Sunday (lucky guy keeps his boat at the dock behind his house in Cocoa Beach) and checked out the Banana River. All the years I lived in the area, I didn't know it was so shallow. No way my fin would work. After checking out the big cruise ships, we motored up to a waterfront restaurant and had lunch,(VERY thin water). I had a private laugh as Leon showed off to the power boaters, by sailing away from the slip back the way we came. He doesn't need no stinkin' motor!
I liked the sailmaker Mac McQuillen's attitude and service toward small boat guys like me (with dumb questions, and he got my work done between putting sails on a couple of boats), so much that I went back and had a second set of reefs put in the main. I was running short on time before I had to catch a plane, but he got the job done ahead of schedule and under the cost quoted me. He also backs his work-- if the reef or cringle rips, he will fix it free as long as I have the sail. If you need sail work done on the central east coast of Florida, give him a call at 321-777-9555. He is a nice guy who gives good service at a good price.
Oh, and thanks again for the sail, Leon.

Skip,

You're welcome, and thanks again for lunch! Sorry we didn't have time to get out in the ocean. I'm glad you had a good time, and got such good results from Southsails. Based on your pleasant experience there, I'll try to send them more work.
