The 51st annual Mug Race is the 1st of May. So come on down to the Rudder Club on the 17th and register to join in a family fun time. No triangle just a straight shot up the river. Be sure and bring plenty of balloons and sling shot, cause if the winds are light the fun begins. See you at the Holiday Inn Palatka on Friday. I will be the C250 with the Association Burgee and the big Stars and Strips at the top. An as Don would say, "ya'll come".
Frog and The General C250, Pretty Penny II, #743 FLEET 25 Coronado 15, M-Cube, #3316
Count me in. I have been waiting all year for this. I have never raced before and have an experienced crew of beer tasters. It will be fun no matter what. What are your plans down there on Fri night? I am planning to stay overnight on the boat with the crew arriving in the morning. Water ballons we DO know how to deliver. I am still trying to decide the headsail issue.
I will be at the dock until 1930 when the skippers meeting starts, then back to the boat. I hope your crew is gong to arrive early since C25/C250 start time will be around 0804. We need more boats to enter, at least five, for us to have our own class. Last year we only had four so no C25/C250 class.
WOW! Is it that time again? Last three years I've been on the river to watch it go by. I will definetly try to make it. Chick-a-pea still does not have a motor right now. And my jib is about blown out. But I do have a new Tohatsu 9.8 25" 4 stroke on backorder. Hope it shows up before then. They do not come on the market until 4/20. BTW, what is legal for a jib? Do they allow the reacher/drifter? Do I have to have my sails measured? Can I order a 135%? Or should I stick with the 110%?
I wouldnt worry too much about the sails. It is a weekend of nothing but sailing. I amsure there are a bunch of profesionals trying like heck to win. It is my objective to finish! And of coarse bombard the boats that are passing me. I am bringing a bunch of ballons!
First I failed to mention that early registration is at the Rudder Club of Jacksonville on tht 17th of April from 1930 - 2100. As for the sails, you can use anything you want you just have to list your make, model, length and spin or no-spin. There is no sail measuring. So use whatever the wind dictates and you can handle. I picked up my new Tohatsu 9.8 4 stroke Wednesday and will install tomorrow. Hope to do some testing on Sunday if the weather holds. Check with your dealer he may allready have it in stock. Look forward to seeing you in Palatka.
Where do you recomend parking the boat for the night? It is getting close! I cannot wait. See you there on the 17TH. Do you know what the penalty for having a chute is? HMMM Just thinking.
Tom, depending on what time you arrive in Plataka, you could get in a slip at the city dock or raft up at either the city dock or Holiday Inn dock. The slips are for hotel stayers, but they don't say anything to people who raft up after the slips are full. EM me about your estimated arrival time and we can work up something. I am in hopes we can get a fleet started, which was the purpose of trying to get the Catalina owners in this race. I know there are more than just Ben, Tom and me out there sailing around. There are four C25's on my lake that I know of, but they must not read the forum. Still hoping !!!
There is a 25 in the slip next to me and another one that sails out of Julington Creek that I've seen on several occasions. I tried hailing the 25 from Julington but got no respose.
BTW, Pretty Penny II, How's that new motor? I'm wondering about the five position tilt. Does it tilt up OK? Is it easy to reach the release latch? I'm still waiting on mine.
Also found out the Gamble Rogers Folk Fest in St. Augustine is the same weekend as the Mug Race and we already reserved a site at Anastasia State Park for our travel trailer. I'm working out the logistics now as to how I can do both.
Ben, check the Tohastu posting on this forum. I put a lot of info on it. The tilt lever would be better if on the port side for C250 since the engine mounts to starboard. If you mount it to port it is fine. Even though the weight is 90 lbs it tilts up almost as easy as my 70lb. Sailmaster. Hope you can work out the logistics for the race. We need all the Catalina 25's we can get in the race.
Tom,if you are spinnaker equipped and you must mark spinnaker on your entry sheet and your handicap will set accordingly. If you decide not to use it, assuming the winds are light enough, your handicap stays the same. So if you don't plan on using it leave it home and mark non-spinnaker.
Here is an article on the MUG Race. I currently have the outboard on the bench in pieces. I never use it more than 10 minutes getting in and out of the mooring field. When I did a stress test it overheated. I did the waterpump and pulled the thermostat and found a LOT of buildup in the head. Now the head is off and a new gasket will be here on Mon. 8 yrs of saltwater use from PO is to blame. The other blame falls on me for not running the engine hard before now! http://www.jacksonville.com/tu-online/stories/042504/spo_15437218.shtml
Tom, sorry to hear about your motor problems. I have a small Elgin one lunger that runs if you need it. The article on the Mug was very good and hit the nail on the head about total number of boats. I have been in the 400 boat race and it was a panic at the start. There was no handicap start at the time just all the cats off at 0900 and the monos off at 0910. The start line was like being on a dodge car track. The General said that was her job to sit on the bow and fend other boats off with her feet. I haven't heard from Ben, so I don't know if he got his new motor and will make it or end up at the St. Augustine Fest. See you in Palatka Friday.
Yo c250 have not seen you guys at wed beer can races at marker 13. Veliste is a c25 sr/fk out of Julington Creek (BULL BAY), would love to help with formation of C25/250 or just a C Fleet. Lots of c25s and 2 c250's just on our dock and there are 3 other docks at Bull Bay. If you can come out and play beer can race is at 6:30 at # 13. Can't make this Wed. as have Steve Winwood tkts. If you see us, hide the liqueur and the women as we take no prisoners.
Did not know there was such an animal on Wednesday's, but will have to figure a way to get everyone together on the hard so all can meet and do some planning if that is the consenses. How many C25's do you have out on Wednesdays and are they all from Bull Bay? Vernon are you sailing the Mug? If so when are you coming down? It will be a blast.
want to do mug for 9th yaer but may take beating from wife. She has good sense of humor this year may not be it. no to many c25's but I think they do not know about it. I know a number of c25 people that would love to race, but want to dance with other cats. My wife Margaret and i are members of North Florida Criusing Club, which is fun but would love to race against more c 25's
I am game for a midweek sail. I am racing for the first time next weekend. I have the self loading ballast and a few waterballons. We will be grilling steaks and having a few beverages Fri- night at the pier. Racing may be too strong of a word. Surviving is more like it.
4 days till departure. Too bad some of the trailer sailors couldn't make it.
When is everyone leaving for Palatka? We plan to leave Friday morning at first light. Spoke to Diane at Rudder Club to be sure that if there were 5 C25/250 they would make a class for us. Looks like a good chance I think Sappire C25 makes 4 and there are usaully a few more. Will monitor vhf ch 68 on the way down.
I will be departing the NAS marina around 6am. I just finished the last of the BBQ ing and beer stocking. Where are you departing from? I have spoken with Jerry and plan on rafting up with him at the Holiday inn. I am sure another 25 would be no touble. Too bad the race wasn't today with the wind. I flew a hop this morning and saw a bunch of boats heading south. Can't wait.
It is Friday before the race and my motor still has not come in. Sorry I can't even go out and watch this year. Hope everyone has a good time. There is always next year!
Looks like you are the man to tell me all about this Beer Can Race here in Jacksonville. Tell me more.
Speaking of Steve Winwood. Fabulous concert, was it not?

It looks like I am a tad late on this "Mug Race!" But are there any other races around Jacksonville coming up in the near future? I feel like such a clod, but I have to yet to purchase a boat. I am unfortunate in not having extra time on my hands for extra curricular activities but would love to watch from the shore. I am sure that will motiviate me enough to stop working and start my research on a sailboat purchase. You can not live in Florida without one.
Thank you in advance, Ashley

Ashley, West Marine has a two books (FREE) called "Boaters Quarterly" and Southwinds (monthly) that has all of the events going on around the area and their sponsors. They also have EM addresses for them that you can go to and see all the events sponsored by that organization. The Southwinds book is strictly sailing while the other covers all the areas.
Thank you. I will go by West Marine. Until then, do you know the EM addresses to eye them online?
AW
