While I'm not usually a Cubs fan, but with another opening day just behind us, I thought I'd share a little baseball tidbit that some may not be aware. The Cubs held spring training on Catalina Island from 1921 - 1951. I was first informed on my first camping trip there about 15 years ago, while walking by the ballfield up the hill next to the golf course above Avalon. I was recently reminded when a local TV documentary did a show which did some great interviews of former players who were visiting Catalina for the first time since they played there many years ago (one guy was a rookie 60 years ago). The show told of a book on the subject which I was not aware (book link). One thing none of the former players said in the show, however, was anything negative about their experience...a few years ago an oldtimer in my church said he used to go out there to watch some games when he was a kid, and that some of the players (veterans) were not so happy about having spring training at Catalina, probably because it was somewhat isolated and could be cold/damp in February, suggesting that the only reason they went there was because Mr. Wrigley, who owned the island, was just being cheap.
