I installed a sony car sterio with cd player a few years ago and with an adapter am using the stern mounted vhf antenna. Fm reception is fine but there is no am at all. I have placed a new antenna at the mast head for VHF but there must be something about the vhf antenna that does not work with am. any thoughts?

John,

Are you using the CD/AM/FM Stereo on the same antenna as your marine VHF radio?

Hi Don,

The am/fm/cd is using a stern mounted VHF antenna. The vhf is using the new masthead antenna so nothing else is sharing the stern antenna.
Is this just the wrong antenna for am/fm reception? Like I said, fm is great but there is no am.

I had the same problem (FM OK, AM absolutely dead) with a car am/fm/cd and found that the previous owner (or his child) had done a poor job of splicing the coax, and the shielded exterior portion wasn't connected while the core was connected. I respliced and wrapped the shielded exterior w/aluminum foil before taping and got my AM back. I don't know whether there was real cause and effect here or not, but now the AM works ... might look at the coaxial cable splices.

I had to use an adapter to go from the VHF cable to the radio cable. there may be as you say a problem with the connection.
