My 250 has an embossed plate which states it is hull number 578. Yet, the mainsail bears number 583. Can anybody tell me why? My other boats always had the hull and sail numbers match.

Sounds like someone packed the wrong sail with your boat. If you bought it new, they should match. Mine did.
