Can any of you folks tell me whether converting the "stock" cabin lights in a 1987 C25 to halogen would require replacing the fixtures-or is it just a matter of getting halogen bulbs? Thanks.
I have a dual intensity a halogen light above the galley, and a halogen reading light in the V-berth. As the others have said, halogen bulbs run hot. They really need to be in ventilated metal and glass fixtures to prevent serious overheating problems from occuring.
As for replacing the stock lighting fixtures, the ones that were in my 1979 C-25 when I got it were unreliable cheap camping trailer junk. I was glad to replace them. You might also consider a fluorescent fixture above the table -- they're very energy efficient.

I second that. A single 8 or 15 watt flourescent centrally mounted will light up the whole cabin and use far less power than the incandescent bulbs that are in the OEM factory cabin lights.
I just replaced all my cabin lights with halogen dome lights except for the light over the table. I put in a dual rocker fluorescent that has a red tube for night use. It lights up the cabin very well and doesn't ruin anyone's night vision.
MIke, Where did you purchase the fluorescent light? I am ready the replace the stock 'eye-strainer' over the table. The red tube would be great for the night sails we take.
Ed, I purchased the light at West Marine. The brand name is Thin-lite. It was around $55. They also sell halogen dome lights that have red and white bulbs with a dual switch. I've seen them at other marine stores around San Diego.
