We just purchased a 1982 Standard rig, swing keel, traditional interior C25. The boat is in wonderful shape and with only minor mods (initially) it is ready for the water. I just filled the fresh water tank and the sink pump works. My only problem is (since the marine head is a new fixture in my life) there are no instructions. I bought both the technical manuals, but they are not very clear with regards to the head operation. The holding tank is under the port side berth and there is no sink in the head area.
We have moved up from a C22 which was equipped with a portipotti and that wonderful invention, the johnny pot.
Any helpful info about the head would be truly appreciated. We put her in the water this coming weekend. If I'm lucky, maybe Compass Rose will be around.
I have an 81 SR fin keel with a lavatory on the starboard side of the head area. Usually marine heads are supplied with flush water via a thru-hull valve. On the C25 that valve is usually located under the vee-berth, and accessible through a small door below the aft end of the vee berth. Open the valve when using the head, and be sure to close it immediately afterward (always keep thru-hulls closed when on the high seas). The flush handle on the head will have two positions, one for filling the bowl with water, the other for flushing contents into the holding tank. First, with the seacock (thru-hull) open, pump water into the head (not too much--that is a S m a l l holding tank. Then, shut off the thru hull valve, switch the pumping handle to empty the bowl, and pump for all your life's worth. Oh, and best to add some head deodorizer at this point. If it's the first use of the season, also add some lubricant to keep the pump happy. On some C25's, I understand the head can be flushed from the fresh water supply as well. If there's no check valve, that could be a recipe for disaster, however. This may not be the case on yours, since you have no lavatory in the head compartment (how to wash your hands afterward...?)
There may be some instructions/drawings in the boat owners manual, available on this site. But there seems to be several variations on different setups.
My boat also only has a galley sink, so the thru-hull under the v-berth only supplies water to the head. In order to get an idea, you may want to poke your head under cushions, hatches, doors, etc. to follow the path of the hoses that leave the head and holding tank. On mine, the head pumps everything into the holding tank. From there, I can pump the holding tank out through the deck or with the cockpit bilge pump (with the Y-valve thus set) out through the transom thru-hull (but only if 3+ miles offshore). The holding tank also has a smaller vent hose which exits through the deck.
Either way, almost all operate in the same manner - open seacock, pump minimal water into bowl, take care of your obligations, pump a bit more water in, switch the pump to the dry setting and evacuate the rest of the contents, close the seacock.
Always leave the switch on the pump to dry bowl setting when not in use.
