I need to replace the pump assembly on my C25. I know it is more cost effective to replace the entire head. How hard is it to get the head off the boat? I don't have any way to access the bolts holding the base to the sole. Do I have to cut an access plate to remove it? Any pics of projects would be helpful. Thanks, Sid
Sid, Removing an old head and replacing it isn't too difficult. I did mine a few months back, and if I can do it anyone can. I only ran into trouble when I didn't follow the directions (natch..).
My head wan't bolted in, but held in place by large machine screws( no need for access hatches). I really don't know what they're called, but you'll see when you take yours out.
First step : shut all thru-hulls, and remove the hoses from the head and tie them up out of the way.
Second step: remove the bowl from the base. There are only 4 bolts holding it on.
Third step: Remove the bolts from the base. A long socket is useful here.
Fourth step: put in new head by reversing these steps and following the directions that come with the head.
A servicable manual head can be found for $100-$150. If they aren't already, double clamp all the hoses when you put them back on. Also, you'll probably have to drill new holes for the base, but its no big deal. I had a great deal of trepidation about this, so I put it of for a long time. it was way easier than I thought.
The part that I wasn't sure on was the base to the deck. Is there wood in the deck to hold the screws or does it have to be through bolted? The boat is at the slip now and we're spending 4 days aboard at the end of the month. My wife is 71/2 months pregnant and refuses to use portapotties. Sid
There didn't seem to be any wood under the fiberglass. Those four large screws are holding really well. Through bolting would require cutting an access plate which is way above my humble mechanical skills.
I'm suprised we haven't heard from some other folks on this. I know I'm not the only one to change out a head. I'm sorry I don't have pictures, but I did this just before joining the association.
I don't really want to add an access plate. If I can't simply unscrew it from the deck, screw the new one down, and reconnect lines I'll be happy. To bad there are no pics. I'm sure someone else has done the job. Thanks for the input. Sid
