OK, Saturday we went to the Coronado Jazz festival (by land). For lunch, we checked out the Coronado Ferry landing. There is a public access dock there with plenty of room to take our C-25s. The ferry landing is a delightful place with food, gifts, beach, bike rentals, and more. Plus the ferry can take you to the Star of India and waterfront museum (which also now includes the carrier Midway).

So on Sunday I put in my mast gates and attempted to sail there.

Pt. Loma was a good beam reach from Mission Bay. I sailed the whole way in light air. I left at 2 and made Pt. Loma at 4:30. I figure the ferry landing to be about 5 more miles. So figure a 3 hour trip, especially if we motor to keep the speeds up around 5.

I made it all the way back to my slip by 6 PM with good winds close hauled to miss the kelp beds.

So I think we could do the round trip in 6 hours.

Option 1 : sail to the Coronado Ferry Landing, spend the day, go to an anchorage in San Diego Bay, sail back the next morning.

Option 2 : sail there early one morning and come back on the same day.

Anyone interested? Please submit on this thread a date/time when you would be able to go and indicate Option 1 or 2.

Wives, children, and significant others not desiring a 3 hour ocean sail can join us there by car.

Both options sound good to me. We would be available 5/22 or 5/29.

Docks and anchorage in S.D. bay not too busy on weekends?

Saturday was a perfect sailing day. There was room for 3 boats at the public dock - more if we rafted. So yes, these places are generally open. The Ferry landing dock is only for a couple of hours, no overnight. Only small boats can fit (but a C25 is perfect).

Most spots require anchoring permits. I'll take care of that. The A4 anchorage south of the bridge is free to anyone, anytime, unlimited (would be our last choice, however).

If we anchor in Glorietta Bay, across from the Hotel Del Coronado, you would want to bring your kayaks to get ashore.

Jim,
The boat won't be ready for a few weeks. Depending on what happens Friday, I'll probably will be on light duty until the middle of JuneBut, don't hold up on my account. I can always be a car guy to make it to our fleet meeting in Coronado(or you could lash me vertically to the foredeck)

Jim, we've had two solid weekends of nothing but school related activities (all day things) and school work....

I sent you an email just a few minutes ago so will repeat anyway.

I will most likely be down Wednesday evening to sail. No, more like 99.5% sure at this point.

Option 1
Sailing to San Diego Bay: Definitely do a there and return this Saturday with Susie (wife) and maybe Michelle (daughter) althought with our just 18 high school senior I may have to promise her a shopping trip midway through the sail, or at least lunch at a fancy eatery at a dock there.

Option 2
Overnight? What about this Friday sail there, stay over, return Saturday? Meet the "ladies" somewhere Saturday in SD Bay, then we can sail back to Mission Bay.

Option 3
Sail there this Saturday, overnight, back Sunday.

As for other dates: May 22, 23 are out because I am taking the Solar Boat team to Lake Skinner for the 22 high school team Solar Cup sponsored by EMWD, the water people (read: don't pay, don't drink) who are spending a TON of your money on this event; just ask me sometime how much I think.

The 29th weekend is good but we also need to keep in mind our National Race that day. But...we could race and then sail because we don't have to work on Monday so that would be a very good weekend for this.

The first weekend in June is also good but only two days to do the trip.

BTW, remember to remind the entire C25/C250 association of the BIG RACE on May 29th. (There, I just did it )

Lets talk about it Wednesday night. I'll be there around 5 PM.

Amy made the league finals in Varsity 100 meter hurdles (as a 9th grader freshamn) and if she does well in the prelims tonight I may have a final track meet - I think it's Friday. Can't miss her in the league championship race!

By Wednesday I will know.

Sailing to an anchorage Friday night and going to the public piers Saturday morning is an interesting idea. We could have breakfast at the Hotel Del, take the ferry to the ship museums, lunch at the ferry landing, sail back to MB for a dock barbeque (or just put the boats away and go home tired!)

Your May 15 race could be Ferry Landing to Slip, first one in wins!!!

OK, the Fleet 7 cruise to San Diego Bay will leave L Dock at around 10AM Saturday May 15, sail or motorsail as required to Coronado Island Ferry Landing (arrive around 1 PM), lunch, explore Coronado Island, depart by 3 PM, sail back to L dock arriving around 6 PM

Could stay later depending on how much fun we are having!

Be prepared for 6 hours on the water and have enough gas to motor 15 miles. We should have good sailing, moderate seas, sunny skies, warm temperatures.

We can call the leg from the San Diego Bay outer marker to the red bouy (homeward bound leg) the race Gary proposed for this day. Should be 6 miles upwind in 10 to 15 knots.

In case anyone is interested in a little detour, I plan to be on the stringline at the Isthmus on Saturday night.

Hey, Richard!!! So here's how we do our Saturday race: We leave San Diego bay and get to red marker at the entrance to Mission Bay around 6pm. We all round the mark to port, then head on a course about 272 (rough guesstimate) to the Isthmus, arriving about 19.5 hours later. We can do it....

Jim,
Could you send me Fleet #7 Captains info for listing in the Mainsheet. I am starting to work on the Aug. issue. Also I will be asking all Captains for a short fleet report due on the first week of June.
Thank you

Cruise was cancelled due to me feeling sick. We need to get everyone's phone number distributed so if this happens again we can communicate better.

Lets try again soon!

Jim,
Sorry you guys had to postpone the cruise! The Admiral and I came down late this afternoon to hear some sea stories, but L dock resembled a ghost town(except for Oregon Mike who was staring at his empty slip). I came through my procedure okay. The doc couldn't find anything wrong. I still need to take it easy for a couple of weeks.

Sorry to hear things didn't work out for you guys.

I was able to sneak out a little early on Friday, and got a mooring at Two Harbors just about at sunset. Turns out they don't open the stringline until Memorial weekend. Also, I felt a tad second-class in my boat in that I was surrounded by a bunch of Flicka's, Dana's, Orion's, etc. who were attending the annual Pacific Seacraft Rendezvous -- real nice folks, though.

Although it was my third trip over this year, it was the most special to me because it was my first trip to Catalina with my oldest daughter (4 yrs), just her and me. I'll always remember it very fondly. We decided to go because she's now big enough to climb into and out of the dinghy by herself using the stern ladder (with me steadying the dinghy). Anyway, another great trip -- really good southwest winds going over under reefed main and partially reefed jib, although we had to motorsail about halfway back in fluky east winds.
