I remember this coming up a while back, but I can't seem to find the right thread. I thought the right size , as I remember it, was 1/2 inch, so I ordered some. They were the wrong size. Of coarse, I didn't have a tape measure with me to measure the old ones, when I was going to instaul them last Sunday. So, here I am asking. I thought all the masts were the same, other than standard and tall. For what it's worth, I did find out the mast head is different on the later model 25's, which I have. Thanks,
I may very well have been the one to lead you astray. Sometime back I mentioned that I had replaced the slugs on my 1985 SR with 1/2", while the online owner's manual specifies 3/8". My 1/2" nylon slugs with SS bails are working beautifully, less twist and bind, but the model years may have had different tolerances. Or my kerf may have been expanded from twenty years of use.
The mast slot (kerf) on the standard rig mast is 3/4" by 3/4" so the 1/2" slug should fit once you get it into the slot.
I believe your 1/2" slugs will work once they get through the mast slot opening. My new main came with 1/2" slugs, but these larger slugs wouldn't fit into the mast slot opening. To remedy the situation, I enlarged the mast slot opening to accomodate the larger slug.
The tall rig mast slot is smaller, 3/4" by 1/2", which may require going down to a 3/8" slug.
Yeah, what Don said, while I was looking for the reference.
I can't find the reference to the 3/8" slugs that I found last winter, but my old slugs were 3/8". However, this graphic (4-1-4 from the Newer Version of the owner's manual listed on this association's website) shows the kerf to be 3/4" by 3/4" on the SR. Thanks again guys! I had seen diagrams and that was what confirmed my memory. What I didn't know or remember was that the opening may need to be enlarged to accept the 1/2inch and mine does.
I, too, thought the 1/2 in. was correct size. Needless to say it wasn't, but at least I switched to the 3/8 in. nylon ones to replace my plastic sail slugs on my Cat 250. Also, I added a silicone-class lub on the slugs and head board - made it work a lot easier. Live and learn. I don't know if enlarging the kerf slightly would matter?
