I bought a Catalina 25 with a swing keel. I have been looking for a trailer for this boat. With the exception of Triad, the manufacturers I contacted do not make trailers for sailboats. Any idea where I can find a new or used trailer?
I bought a trailer last year for my 85 swing keel. Found it used in a traile place. Bolted my cradle on it works great. Was concerned it wouldnt float off because its a little higher Than it could be. But it floats fine just needs to be high tide Paid $1000.00 for the trailer had the cradle
My trailer is a SHORELANDR (no e) Their web site is not listing Catalina so I assume that they focus on power boats. 2 other clues, I have seen a recent thread about trailers, do a search and have a go at it. There is a fellow in Texas that provides a market forum for boats and salvage stuff ... Good luck,
On the West Coast, your best bet is TrailRite, located in Santa Ana California. They are the "official" Catalina Factory trailer builder, and you will probably have the best results from them in terms of the trailer's hull support rollers or bunks fitting correctly. DHM Enterprises in Sacramento, CA has built at least a couple of hundred Catalina 22, 25, and 250 trailers over the years for the local Catalina dealership (The Foredeck - aka Catalina Direct). The trailer under my own boat is a DHM. Being a custom builder, they are about 10% more expensive than TrailRite, but their quality and workmanship is excellent.
Some advice if you end up buying a new trailer: 1. Specify the trailer to be built with 5200# capacity axles and brakes, and load range "D" tires on 6-bolt hubs, with a DICO #10 actuator/coupler. This will give you a trailer with 10,000# capacity that will give many years longer service than the lighter-duty 7500# capacity trailers that most Catalina 25's sit on. The 7500# trailers are BARELY adequate for an EMPTY Catalina 25. By the time you have filled the tanks, loaded a lot of cruising gear, etc., a Catalina 25 can weigh 7000#, which is somewhat overloading the trailer and tires by a small margin. 7500# trailers under a C-25 are more prone to breakdowns from busted welds, bent axles, broken leaf springs, and bearing failure, and the less-rigid frame may be more subject to "shake and shimmy" as you go down the highway. Take my word for it - the 10,000# capacity trailer is worth every penny of the extra $1000~$1500 it will cost over the price of a 7500# trailer.
