My 1983 cat 25 has cushions and covers that seem to be in great shape. However, they smell very badly, maybe mold/mildew etc. I dont want the fabric or foam cushion to disintegrate. Any good cleaning/ disnfecting ideas will be very much appreciated.
When I first bought my boat I took the cushions out and removed the covers. I then soaked the covers in soapy water in the laundry tub while generous amount of water and soap were applied to the cushions out back (A garden hose helps with this part) After squeezing most of the water from the foam, they were left out to dry thoroughly.
When everything was dry, I put it all back in the boat.
Start with an upholstery cleaner before the Febreze, and use a wet vac to get the cleaner out. Taking the foam out of the covers is like letting birds out of a cage... Getting them back in is tougher than you might suspect.
Also, West is running a two-fer on 3M Mildew Preventer spray... I don't know anything about it, but most things from 3M are very good. Then again, it could just be "marine quality" Febreze! They sent me a coupon I plan to use. I'll be spraying all over the interior.

Can I throw those in the soap and water tub also? Thanks Again <hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote">
Good point!
When I mentioned soaking the covers in the laundry tub, I meant the original plaid looking kind that don't appear to be bothered by a little soap and water. More exotic materials may require special handling.
My cushions are also a velour type of material. As an experiment I took the insert cushion from the forward V berth and threw it in the washing machine with laundry soap.I let it air dry then put the foam back in. The fabric came out looking terrific but it did shrink a tiny bit.On the other cushions I am going to try the spray foam cleanser. If you find something please let us know.
