Hi all,

I am about to launch, and I wish to end a cureent debate. When motoring, should the keel be up or down? While docked, should the keel be up or down? Thanks! We are going in!

IMHO...

1) The boat manouvers a lot better with the keel in the down position.

2) The C25 tends to have a bit of 'stern squat' when motoring near hull speed...
having the keel up makes that worse too.

Down if you have water. Mines half up.

If you motor with the keel down you will go over wakes and other water disturbances with less rocking. Same at the dock. It's just personal choice though.

This is an old debate. I keep my keel up at the dock: 1. C 25 handbook says so (what do THEY know?); 2. Keeps the pennant out of the water and perhaps reduces corrosion. I've had two cables in 19 years in salt water . . .

As for motoring, this is another old thread. I think my boat is slightly faster with the keel up.

"2. Keeps the pennant out of the water"

I've been curious about this.. does the compression fitting actually come up far enough in the pipe to get out of the water ?

I don't know -- I haven't measured. But the bulk of the cable is certainly out of the water, and that seems significant to me.

It also seems to me that there's less wear on the pivot pin with the keel up snug against the hull. That hardware as well has only been replaced once in nineteen years (four years ago). "Even Chance" stays in the water year-round, with the keel up.

I motored mast down with following wind about 6 miles from launch to marina ( with about 2-4'regular swell). The boat handled exceptionally well with not as much pitch and yaw as I would have expected, so i left the keel up. Might have been different with mast up.
