Standard wire halyards were Nicropressed eyes with thimbles. If you're talking to Kevin or Jeremiah, they know their Catalinas because Kevin used to run Tulsa Sail Craft. Tulsa Sail Craft sold and provisioned all the Catalinas in the Tulsa area.
I think that I'm talking to Kevin, I remember him from Tulsa Sail Craft. We bought a few Laser parts in there. Still have the ol' Laser at my brother's. We ought to take that thing out sometime.
Anyway back on topic. So you're saying that he's right and I can replace the sometimes difficult spliced wire with the easier to deal with compressed end one??
The present one gets stuck every time I go out and I have to mess with it back and forth to get it to raise the jib.
Yes, but that will require lowering the mast so you can access the masthead. Personally I'd go with all rope halyards, and I will next time I need a replacement. Unfortunately, I didn't know enough when I replaced the halyards two years ago, so I'm stuck with what I've got for now.
P.s. I suppose you could cut the current wire above the splice and Nicropress your own thimbled eye, if the wire's long enough. Then you could bowline the current line to the eye, if the line's in good shape. That would save you a bunch of money and solve the jamming problem. Of course, then you get to share the joy of experiencing the bowline jamming in the aft lowers.
