This is my first experience with any type of holding tank. When pumping out the tank, is it necessary to open the large plug on top of the tank or does the stern vent fitting allow enough air flow for pumping ? Is it a good idea to pump in a little fresh water through the head while emptying the tank ?

You do not have to remove the plug as long as your air vent is working properly. I don't usually open the seacock to flush unless we are in a fresh water area. That is one of the reasons I carry 24 gallons of water in two 12 gallon tanks in the v-berth. The others are weight forward and the General likes fresh water showers.

When pumping a holding tank I usually have a freshwater hose standing by. Pump the tank, run some fresh water down the pumpout hose, pump again. Second Frog, do not open the tank, unless you like the smell...
