I have been in contact with several sailors who have contacted me about the National Regatta in Portland next month who either are relatively new owners or are NOT experienced racers. Some of these folks have sounded unsure about mixing it up with the more serious folks on the race course.
IF there was enough interest, we could (I think) institute a separate fleet of novice boats who could miss the stress of the racer's starts, sail a shorter course?, forget spinnakers, and compete for some kind of separate "FUN" trophy. We will work out details to suit, but the intent is for this fleet to "race"? without the pressure of a "Nationals" intensity....
Personally, I am just trying to get as many boats out as possible, give everybody a good experience and help "de-mystify" this racing thing a bit so that next time more sailors might be willing to give it a try.
The Regatta is already planned with free moorage, several chalk talks on rules/tactics, a river tour, a wine tasting, a barbecue, a pizza (pasta) and beer feed, and TONS of trophies and doorprizes, plus a raffle for sailing gear, shirts, and even a flat screen TV donated by the Blazers and Good Guys.
Come out and join in the fun in Portland on July 14 (registration) and stay for the cruises through the 20th if you like.
Click on this link to find the Fleet 94 website with a crew "dating service", and links to a Nationals "Homepage" with tons of information. I would love to hear from you, and SOON, if the "FUN" class sounds more appealing to you....We need to decide if we will offer this FUN class at our next Fleet 94 meeting on Saturday, June 12.

Okay.....I am taking the position that only 20 readers and no responses means that there is little interest in this aspect of Nationals. I sure was wishing there would be a better response to the Nationals this year. What could I do to convince more of you on the West coast that this is going to be a very FUN event, and that one needn't be threatened if one is not an experienced racer; there will be good food, good company, and lots to learn in a pretty part of the country. Wish more folks were signing up, that's all....

If I was going that is what I would do. Cool idea. Sorry I'm on the opposite side of the USA and will not be going. Best of luck. BTW, what is a "chalk talk"?
Oh, Man! I am getting old! Back in the old days....before PowerPoint....etc., when I was a student, teachers used a blackboard and a piece of chalk to deliver lessons. Coaches used this method to diagram plays, etc. I was referring to the fact that we have speakers who will deliver "lessons" on rules/tactics, etc. Learning opportunities were called "chalk talks". I suppose that for the REALLY old timers (no names here) I could have said, "sand/stick" talks.....
This is the pits, this getting old....
Wish you could make it, Ben, but you are forgiven!

Gary B. - I'm really sorry that there was no response for your "fun fleet". I think folks are missing a great chance to come and have fun...as well as a great learning opportunity. Derek
Derek: There has been some response among the locals, so we may well do something yet. At last word, we have 13 boats, and several more who say "For sure", "the check's in the mail", etc. I am contacting a few more new "interesteds" today.
It's shaping up. Are you registered, my Friend? I saw Alice out last Friday in Tybreaker; she said you had spoken by phone.
Still counting on you to do a quick "chalk talk" the morning of. We don't have TONS of time at that skipper's meeting, but your advice/wisdom would be helpful, I am sure. Do you want me to make copies of the information you have sent? I am pretty sure it's in my 6" high file of Nationals stuff.
Oh, BTW, Full Sail Ale (remember Rip Curl?) is supplying the kegs at a substantial discount! They are for the barbeque and the pizza/pasta Awards dinner. I did that for YOU, Dude!
Looking forward to it all......the family is crewing, but, we have only been out once! We won the little, informal 6 boat Memorial Day "round the buoy thing", but we won't contend for hardware in July, I am sure......I am trying to be okay with that!
Gary B. - to heck with the racing, I'd come up there just for the beer!! I'm still OK for a "chalk talk". I'd appreciate you making copies - other than that, all I need is a board to draw on, something with which to draw, and something to wipe it off! I'll give Alice a call tonite and find out what's happening. We are still expecting to arrive on the Monday and leave on the Sunday, but no flights booked yet. And if you don't win some hardware you will be demoted to Captain of Vice... Derek
