I am moving to the Richmond, VA area (with my new Catalina 250 WB). Does anyone have a recommendation as to a sailing club located in the southern Chesapeake/James River area?

Although I have a trailer (is is a water ballast model), I would prefer to either dock or moor the boat, if possible.

I currently have it moored at a sailing club in Biscayne Bay (Miami area). I can feel the cold water already.

Welcome to Richmond (we're in Glen Allen) and our C25/C250 forum!

There are some small lakes in Chesterfield County & the James gets fairly wide down in Hopewell, but most sailors go to the "Rivah" which seems to be on the Rappahanock River anywhere from Tappahanock down to Deltaville. We keep our C250 on the Piankatank River in Deltaville. There's a yacht club there with an active racing group if you like racing. Lots of folks keep their boats on the Rappahanock side of Deltaville (its a penninsula). Urbanna on the Rappahonock is a nice town too & a bit closer. If you really like the activity of a sailing club there are several in the Hampton & Norfolk area (a couple hours drive away).

I think you'll like the Chesapeake Bay. Its a little colder than Miami & the jellyfish are annoying in late summer, but the sailing is wonderful!

Thanks Cathy. I will be in Chesterfield this weekend househunting with my wife and an agent. Hope to be able to make it up to Deltaville area to check out the sailing clubs. How long of a drive is it up to the Deltaville area? Any particular clubs that you recommend?

Welcome, RC. I live in Glen Allen and my boat is in Urbanna. Urbanna Yachting Center, where I keep my baot, has a club, but you might also look at Fishing Bay Marina in Deltaville. They're pretty active racers down there.

It takes me 70 minutes to get to Urbanna from Glen Allen. It's another 15 or so to Deltaville.

The biggest club in Deltaville by far is Fishing Bay Yacht Club (www.fbyc.net). They are really into racing there and nice folks and seems like an active club. We keep our boat in Deltaville at the mouth of the Rappahannock River at Stingray Harbor Marina (www.stingrayharbor.com). It has a little easier access to the bay that Fishing Bay and there are a lot of fun people over there. I really get the impression that Deltaville is better than anything on the James and it only takes about 1:15 to get there from Richmond.

Brooke and Jared, thanks for the input. I was able to persuade my wife to escape from our Chesterfield househunting visit to check out Deltaville for the first time on Sunday - we loved it. Ran into some incredilby friendly fellow sailors at the Stingray Harbor Marina. Based on this and the Stingray website, I am pretty much sold assuming they have available slips. Look forward to joining you on the Chesapeake and "Rivah" by the end of the Summer.

Look me up when you come down to Stingray - we are over in slip E-1 - "Saba Rocks". There are 3 other Catalina 25's over on E-dock as well (that is the lower price dock with the "smaller" boats - there are some pretty big boats at that marina). They have slip availability and price list listed on their website, but I haven't looked in a while - but check it out. I really like the place and everyone is really laid back and haven't met anything but great people there.

If you get over to the Piankatank side drop by Fishing Bay Harbor Marina's B-dock for a visit. We're in B-101 (3rd from the end).

We should have a Deltaville (& nearby) get-together sometime.

Excellant idea Cathy. You could plan a barbeque someplace, or a raft up at some park or mooring area. That's the way a fleet could begin!

I think I may have just volunteered myself . I'd suggest a fall picnic, but that's good sailing weather. Maybe I'll have to get together an August "it's too hot & there's no wind" get-together. Fishing Bay has a pool !

I found out late last week that Stingray just added a few slips by converting 2 Catamaran slips at the E Dock to 4 monohull slips. Needless to say, I am getting my application in this week. Look forward to meeting up with my fellow Catalina sailors. Thanks for "volunteering" Cathy! Fall sounds better for me because I may not have my boat up there until the Fall. I am not looking forward to trailoring all the way up I95 from Miami! But I am looking forward to enjoying the Fall sailing.

Take a look at the Salt Ponds Marina in Hampton, VA - down 64 from Richmond. Its a resort marina with pool, restaurant and laundry. There is a sailing club here, but I'm still new to the neighborhood, so I don't have all the details. Nice beaches nearby, with stuff to do at night.

Maureen, it's another good half hour or more (assuming NO traffic backups -- AS IF!) to Salt Ponds from Richmond. And, you have to deal with Sisyphus Memorial Highway: I-64, which has been under construction for thirty years with no end in sight. The backups around Williamsburg and in Newport News/Hampton are one of my visions of hell.
