I've read with some amazement the articles concerned with aberrant low speed motor functions ( mostly from Honda's but not exclusively)to the extent that some very conservative types were raging at the beasts. I counted my blessings since my '93 Sailmaster Johnson never performed thusly. Though I never beat my chest extolling the Johnson's virtue in this regard I always wondered what was going on with the folks so smitten. Then New York changed from MTBE to ethanol to assist in the clean burn of gasoline and suddenly I joined the ranks of the damned looking to blame every part of the motor for such shortcomings. Was it defective spark? Two real heart stopping jolts from the spark plug wires cleared that thought from my mind. Then it must be fuel related, right? So I emptied the fuel tank and dried it...drained the carb... refilled with new fuel...plus carb cleaner and VOILA it's running again.
Checking the owners manual re fuel and there was the advice to not use alcohol additive fuels. Recommending that ethanol gasohol in excess of 10 % was contraindicated and the same for methanol fuels in excess of 5 %.
Well after this experience I'm in search of plain ole gasoline. Any Ideas?
Gasoline distributors sometimes sell 'racing fuel' for off-public highway use... no additives. As you can imagine, it's not cheap. Ethanol will literally 'eat' fuel systems not designed for it.
IMHO Introduction of MTBE was a blunder... never should have been used in the first place.
