The planets have finally swung in my favor. I have picked up a suitable tow rig to take the ole wing down to the keys. I plan on going for about a week to coincide with lobster mini season. I have spent most of this week in Key West with a broken Navy plane. I looked around and could not find a good ramp. I do have Island fever now and am ready for some vacation time. My questions are:

1: Where is a good ramp on the upper/ middle keys?

2: In key west where is a good ramp?

I am trying to eliminate any issues as the trip could go to heck real quick if there is a problem on the ramp.

The Mini-season is July 28-29. It is a great excuse to swim, sail, and have cold beer with friends. Any takers ????

For those with military benefits there are a lot great deals in Key West.

Thanks, Tom.

Tom, I haven't been to the Base in Key West in a long time, but I if my memory serves me they use to have a nice deep ramp there. I did read somewere that there wasn't a lot of launching ramps around that area. There is Ocean Side Marina in Key West that the Counch Cruisers use each year for their trip to the Dry Tortugas. The phone number is 305-294-4676.

For the upper or middle Keys try John Pennekamp or Bahia honda state parks. Both have excellent ramps.
The biggest problem in the keys is having a place to park your boat and truck while you are out cruising.
I have gone to La Siesta Marina, formerly Matecumbe marina, at Mile marker 80.5 for the last three years. Decent ramp at high tide, laid back marina, and you can park your truck and trailer.

One of my favorite places to take Quiet Time is Lake Tahoe, but the parking issue makes this lake virtually off-limits for trailer-sailors, at least those who want to boat camp overnight. Out of a dozen or more public boat launch ramps scattered around the lake, NOT A SINGLE ONE allows overnight parking. They are all posted "Day Use Only, Towaway from 10:00pm - 6:00am". The only launch facility on the whole lake that is both deep enough to accomodate a Catalina 25, and provides for overnight parking, is Tahoe Keys Marina, and they charge $35 for the ramp and $10/day for parking. I guess this is relatively inexpensive considering Tahoe is such a beautiful location, but it almost seems like the local Government, especially the TRPA (Tahoe Regional Planning Agency) go out of there way to make it as difficult and inconvienient as possible to bring a boat to the lake. At least the San Juan's have lots of launch facilities.

You might talk to a lady I met a couple of weeks ago on Key West. She owns "Scrubs of Key West" on Caroline Street but I don't recall her name. Her and her husband, who is in the Coast Guard, are live aboards at the marina at Boca Chica. She might know (305) 295-7232. They also have a West Marine there. They might be of some help also. I found you have to be creative just to park a car there! At least anywhere around Duval Street, not that I went down there or anything.

The last time I was lobstering in The Keys was on Little Torch Key. We rented a house on the canal. And there was a ramp on the canal at a fish camp type place. Don't know the name. Don't know if this is of any help. When we went to the Bahamas form Homestead there was an eight dollar a night fee for parking trailer and tow vehicle.
