There as been a bit of interest in the "FUN" fleet idea, but folks are asking for what "exactly" we have planned for boats who would like to rendezvous, hang out, learn and socialize instead of RACE.
As a new player in all this, I am soliciting ideas of fun activities that non-racers could do while racers race. Operative words: FUN, skill building?, non threatening.......Interested in all feasible ideas on a body of water with 1+ knots of current.
For those who don't know what I am talking about, here is a repeat of the earlier post that gives the background. I hope this will encourage a few more folks to come out and join us. We are doing 3 days of cruising after the regatta, too. (optional)
Posted - 06/12/2004 : 22:49:34 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ It is official. Fleet 94 is offering a "JUST for FUN" class at Nationals next month in Portland, Oregon for those boats with skippers who aren't interested in racing. We don't want you to stay away! The relatively low cost of the Regatta/Rendezvous will remain the same, since fees are going to shirts, moorage, food, drink and the like, but there will be NO serious racing with this fleet. There is a Beer Can "Free Bowl of Soup" round the bouy affair on Friday evening to help the Oregon Food Bank that can certainly be part of the activities, but nobody keeps score. Alternatively, we will suggest and organized some sailing activities for you that involve boat handling and "Rendezvous" type activities "JUST FOR FUN"..."Boat Tag" was suggested with a nerf ball "You're IT" signal tossed at the main, etc. You won't miss out on the socializing, you'll be part of the action, but free of the "competition" part of things. We have a trophy assigned for the "Winner" of the "Had the Most Fun" category, Bring water cannons! Please contact me ASAP to register your interest in this fleet. I sure admire the effort you are putting into this. I hope you end up pleased. When you and I first offered to do the Nationals I was very concerned that the typical traveling fleet would not justify the dedication of the clubs resources to an exclusive event. It almost seems like we should just get our own starts at a larger regatta. Maybe you should open this up to an all Catalina regatta featuring the 25-250 nationals. Just adding one more handicap start might instantly double your registration.
Frank: Still too early to tell. Let's "reflect" when it's all over, but out here the C22 fleet is diminishing and few other Catalinas race....a few C30s. I think Catalina owners are more interested in cruising, which is why we are trying the "fun fleet" idea. Maybe being around a regatta will begin to rub off. I like cruising, too, but the racing thing is how one gets to be SO MUCH better at sailing, IMHO. But it does "seem" daunting when one has not done it...those starts, those rules, etc.....it I does seem a bit scary 'til you have done it a bit...
It's all one big experiment to me....but I can't see this being a bummer for those who choose to come, either racing or "FUN FLEET". I get a little discouraged by the "NO", "Can't" responses, but I need to focus on how great this will be for those who DO show up!
