As the subject above implies, my boom appears to be slanted from the mast toward the stern. The luff and the foot do not make a 90 degree angle.
I have paid carefull attention to making sure the sail is completly raised, and the downhaul is tight. The boat is 20 years old and I imagine the sail is as well. My thoughts are that the sail is just a little stretched out of shape with age.
Your guess that the sail is stretched a little may be an understatement. It's probably been stretched substantially along the leach. It may be time to consider an early Christmas present.....
If you get another season out of your main you're ahead of the game, but if your sail is still sound you may want to wait for the fall when you might get a better deal on a replacement. 20 years is a long time for a main and I wouldn't bother to have it recut since it's probably out of shape and as baggy as in areas you haven't noticed.
