Hello. I want to get my brother a gift that has to do with sailing and was thinking of a compass. Does anyone have any good ideas as to what a newbie sailor would appreciate or what would be appropriate? I appreciate any assitance.
All depends on ones budget. How about a good pair of sailing gloves ( I love my Harkin Black Magics), or polarized sunglasses. Moving up, handheld VHF or GPS. The list can be endless! Also check out the new ships store for clothing and misc. other 250/25 Catalina ideas.
Without knowing what boat your brother has, or what equipment he already has, I'd say he'd appreciate a gift certificate to Boaters World, Sailnet, et al.
If your brother owns an older boat, and if he is a do-it-yourself kinda' guy, he might like a subscription to "Good Old Boat." There are many other sailing magazines available, but they often cater to a more upscale crowd with big yachts and pocket books to match.
I don't want to embarrass you, but unless you know of a specific compass that your brother needs/wants, I don't think that would be a good choice. In this day of affordable GPS and other navigation systems, compasses don't get as much use as they used to.

Look at the water... turn your head 90 degrees, voila. I really like glacier glasses, seriously dark. REI co-op.

I agree Derek...and they help keep your retina's attached
To be honest Frank, I have a pair of Revos that I love to death, can wear them all day and they never bother my eyes. I do wear a pair of polarized on occasion (when it is a water day...swimming cleaning boat...so on) and they don't bother me too much, I can see shallow water easier as well. White sand jumps out and also easier to watch dolpins and fish as they swim by. If they fall over board I'd buy another pair. If the revos fall over, I'd dive in.

Hi a little off subject, however does anybody know of obscure or mainly sail oriented shops/stores etc in the Miami/FT. Lauderdale area. I will be there this weekend and wanted to look around. Further North I didn't have a lot of luck (Daytona/Cocoa). Any info appreciated.
